A better prerelease tie-in than the Prometheus TED videos

I was pleasantly surprised to find out about this graphic prequel to the upcoming movie, Pacific Rim. I really liked the TED teasers for Prometheus, and I like the teaser/extended universe trend going on outside of more and more movies. I'm only in my 30's but I've come to consider myself to be more interested in "old school" sci fi (Heinlen, Asimov, Cherryh, McCaffery, Banks) than anything written in the past 15 years. I was actually a little worried the genere was dying, as any thoughtful and possibly optimistic writing about how human culture and social behavior might change with the introduction of new technology seems to have been superseded by monsters on spaceships and zombies. How are scientists going to be inspired to invent the next tricorder or replicator if someone doesn't dream it up in a book first?
I picked up this graphic novel with fingers crossed and was not disappointed. It is a very tightly written story - there are no wasted scenes, no weirdly choppy dialogue. I'm an avid reader of Fables, American Vampire, and Red Sonja, and this fits right in with those series in both the quality of the artwork and the narrative (actually, the narrative quality was probably better than Red Sonja. Sorry She-wolf). I recommend reading twice, because after the first time you'll be able to go back and pick out characters that show up later in the story in the early panels and learn where they were on K Day. I thought this was an impressive detail, but fair warning, reading this is only going to make you more hyper about seeing the movie, which isn't out for another couple of weeks. If you can pick it up and read it a couple of days before the movie, DO IT!
Also, not sure what the other reviewer was talking about as far as the partial nudity, I was actually pretty relieved that no one was naked in this, I didn't think there was any more nudity than what you'd see at an American beach, and the context was much more appropriate than what you'll find in many other books.

Good Intro to the Universe - But, Alas, Very Short

First let's address some things mentioned on some other reviews:
-Quality of the art work - I haven't read a lot of comic books and/or graphic novels, but I have read several, about a dozen or so. The art work here at least as good of most I've see else were. It doesn't knock it out of the park, but doesn't suck; it's middle of the road, and there's nothing wrong with that. I can read everything clearly, in just a second or two I can pick out all the relevant information from each panel so as not to disrupt the flow, but there is enough detail that I can really dig into most of the panels for more.
-Nudity - There really isn't. There is one panel in which a character is in the shower, her arm covers anything that might be "risqué." There are also a few (three I think, I'm not positive on the number) of scenes of pilot's minds connected to control the Jaeger. This is shown with a commonly used ethereal, out-of-bodyesque dream state; and is typical for these types of shots done nude, i.e. clothes don't show up in the mind's eye (although, apparently eyeglasses do). Here either arms/legs, hair, or mist like shadows cover everything. Your typical beach shows just as much (or more) skin.
Now the good:
This is an interesting look into the early days of the Kaiju Wars. You get to see some of the back stories for several characters and concepts. As the introduction to the book states, any good fictional universe should be as expansive and real as our own. This book shows a peak into some of that.
The bad:
-- NOTE: This is a minor complaint at worst, in some way (read on and you'll see what I mean) it's even a plus --
This book is short. You can read it in about a half an hour. In some ways that's okay, it leaves you both wanting to know more and knowing that there is more here that can eventually be found. That's what makes for a really good supplementary material/expanded universe, the knowledge that there is more to the universe that just "the story."

Pacific Rim prequel

The comic was most enjoyable and re-readable. Overall this is a neat book. There were a few flaws however. The primary issue was that the story was too short if it was a little longer and more detailed it would have been perfect. If you like pacific rim or are going to see the movie you'll enjoy this book
