This seventh volume in the YOU series (following YOU: Having a Baby) by Oprah's favorite physician-authors continues yet further dilutes the well-known brand. Apparently making full use of the data collected for the previous books, radio show, and Oprah programs, the book lacks structure and is uneven and scattershot, providing advice on a select number of not especially essential child health topics in chapters on the biology of infant education; child gastrointestinal issues; infectious diseases, allergies, and the immune system; and preventing childhood accidents and dealing with doctors and hospitals, thus forgoing the traditional structure of most parenting resources, which present information along developmental ages and stages. Some useful material may be found in a section entitled "YOU Tools," which features minimal hands-on instructions for diaper changing, interpreting infant cries, and the like; a number of short lists of required gear--but this section seems more an afterthought, a place to put all the good stuff that didn't fit into chapters. Although readers would expect the media star authors and the pediatric experts they recruited to create a real go-to guide, they will be disappointed, and the familiar, casual tone doesn't work. I can see why many reviewers like this book. It is easy to read, and contains useful information about certain topics. For example, the section on fever is informative and helped me figure out what was going on with my daughter, and when to call the doctor.
However, on certain other topics, it's only really useful as a jumping off point. For example, the section on sleep is only about 4 pages long, and attempts to cover sleeping issues from birth to 6 years old. For another example, the section on transitioning to solid foods does not include any useful information on how to wean from breastfeeding (or formula) after the 1 year mark, and does not even mention the baby led weaning approach, which is rapidly gaining in popularity.
I was considering returning this book, but Amazon's price was so inexpensive, I will probably just keep it.

The YOU docs have done it again. I love the accessible approach and playful style that they can bring to any topic, even parenting. When so many of us are stuck in somber discussions about the most precious tasks of parenting, this book gives confidence and specific insights that rid us of the myths and mistakes that are often shared by friends and family. YOU Raising Your Child has become our family's textbook for basic parenting skills.

Great baby shower gift!

This is a great book for parents of young children. It's not the most encyclopediac, but the information it presents is interesting and fun to read. Paired with a "What to Expect" or Dr. Spock it will be well used by parents who enjoy reading up on kids.
