Wow....

Unfortunatly, I have only read the first book in this seris, but am eagerly saving up my cash to get the next. Those of you who like unique and interesting comics and manga, the walking undead, and are not put off by bloodletting will love this. The story is interesting, the action scenes could rival anything you can see on the big screen, and the art is absolutly superb. Min-Woo Hyung's style is a joy to look at, with brooding shadows and a way of drawing characters I would kill to have.
This is by no means a book for children. The undead are terrifying to see and the blood flow is quite strong throughout the story. I wouldn't suggest that anyone under the age of 12 should read this, unless posessing a very mature and stable mind. Otherwise, please enjoy!!

Hickman Delivers Once Again...

Previously in Avengers...

Tony Stark and Steve Rogers expanded the team roster, in order to combat even bigger threats. There are roughly 20 members on the main team at present. Their missions have been slowly colliding with those of the Illuminati, the secret sect of heroes that work their own missions behind everyone's backs.

Previously in New Avengers...

The Illuminati discovered that the Multiverse is dying. Parallel universes are colliding with our heroes' universe. In order to prevent Earth 616 from being destroyed, they must destroy the incoming parallel Earths.

Lots of shenanigans have occurred, as the Illuminati have raced to save Earth 616. Namor then formed a cabal consisting of Maximus the Inhuman, the mysterious alien Black Swan, and Thanos with some of his generals, to continue the work.

There may now be spoilers ahead...

This volume jumps forward 8 months from when we last saw our heroes, in the Original Sin tie-in. A lot has happened in the missing months in between, and the uninitiated readers may very well find themselves scratching their heads. We initially see the main Avengers team split into different areas; Nightmask and Starbrand are in space investigating parallel incursions, Manifold, Sunspot, Cannonball and Smasher (with Cannonball's and Smasher's infant child) are on an alien planet, Thor and Hyperion are in the Savage Lands, and some are working with S.H.I.E.L.D. to capture someone who has infiltrated Avengers Tower.

That person is Amadeus Cho; genius, former Prince of Power and New Warrior. Now he's a member of the Illuminati. His mission is to retrieve Stark files. He is captured by a joint S.H.I.E.L.D./Avengers taskforce, and Susan Storm, working with this new faction, begins to question him about the other members of the Illuminati, including her husband, Reed Richards.

It seems then, that the Avengers are facing threats on two fronts: dealing with the collapse of the Multiverse, and apprehending the Illuminati.

We follow the Illuminati, again, 8 months further from their last exploits, and the team has changed. Iron Man is missing, Dr Strange is absent, as is Black Bolt. Captain Britain is now on the team, and they are all on the run from the Avengers. The action takes us to Wakanda, then Earth 71202 where we see the Cabal defeating that planet's X-Men variant. We also visit Latveria, where Dr Doom has his own plans for dealing with the Multiverse collapse. That plan involves the Molecule Man, which can't be a good thing.

Back in the Savage Lands, Odinson (no longer known as Thor due to what's going on in his (err, HER) comic!), Hyperion and a group of Ex Nihlo's (it's complicated - read the earlier Hickman Avengers volumes!) head off into the Multiverse on a suicide mission.

And that's pretty much it. Lot's of too-ing and fro-ing for 4 issues between various groupings, all inter weaving with each other, as we watch Cho being interrogated, Wakanda being destroyed and the Illuminati on the run. That is, until the 5th issue of this volume, where the S.H.I.E.L.D./Avengers taskforce follows some clues as to the whereabouts of the Illuminati in Rome, and all is not as it seems with Sue Storm.

So, this volume is a gritty, less-action-more-talking, book. There is some action of course, but it's sporadic. A few panels of the Cabal doing their destruction thing on parallel worlds, Amadeus Cho trying to evade some War Machine drones. The rest of the book has me gripped with the differences of opinions between the two factions: The Illuminati are trying to save the world, but the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. are trying to stop them because they believe that they are doing so illegally. It's a bit of a civil war really, but the interesting thing is while it's all going on, you may find yourself often thinking what has happened in the previous 8 months? There's also other unanswered questions - where are the missing Illuminati members, and just what is this 'Tony Stark Problem' that is being alluded to? And just what is Dr Dooms role in all this?

Well, I'm sure all will be explained further down the line. It's all building up for some interesting plots as Time Runs Out, and we will eventually face what Jonathan Hickman has been building towards since he took the helm of these titles 2 years ago: SECRET WARS.

I should add that the artwork is great throughout, and is shared between various artists; Jim Cheung, Paco Medina, Nick Bradshaw, Dustin Weaver, Valerio Schiti, Stefano Caselli, Kev Walker and MIke Deodato. Some people prefer not to have an ensemble cast of artists, but it doesn't bother me in this instance. Why not showcase various artists' talents in a story with an ensemble cast?

As ever in this title and storyline, this is not a standalone story. You will need to read everything that has transpired before, starting with Volume 1 of Hickman's reign. This is effectively volume 7, and I can't wait to see what's in store in volume 8, aka, Time Runs Out Volume 2.

Another Homerun by Hickman!

Amazing! Jonathan Hickman and Rick Remender are cut from the same cloth. Ever since the Marvel.Now initiative / relaunch, the 2 Avengers books by Hickman & Uncanny Avengers by Remender have been the creme of the crop at Marvel (in fairness, Dan Slott's Superior & Amazing Spider Man books are also right there too). The thing about Hickman & Remender which I love is that they only know how to swing for the fences. Every story these 2 men weave is beyond EPIC in scope, and the consequences of failure in their narratives are catastrophic! For Time Runs Out Vol: 1, we are pushed 8 months after the events of Original Sin. Much has happened since Vol 6: Infinite Avengers. This volume keys in on some of the other characters that did not get facetime in Vol 6. We get to See Cannonball & Sunspot. We also get to see some of the Cabal's dirty work & Namor's regret. In addition, we get a very interesting story with Dr. Doom & his own plans to derail whoever is behind the incursions that are destroying Universes. But the most jarring difference involves the Avengers themselves. They are now under the Umbrella of Shield & are commiting all their efforts into finding the Illuminati. This is not an easy read in and of itself. I do not recommend reading this until you have read Volumes 4, 5 & 6 of Avengers at the very least. I would also strongly encourage you to catch up on New Avengers as well as it focusses on the Illuminati. As i mentioned in my review of Avengers Vol 6, this storyline will make for some very nice Omnibus Editions in 2016!!

Time Runs Out is the Count Down to the End of the Multiverse

A lot of threads are coming together in the "Time Runs Out" storyline as the Marvel universe heads for what is billed as the crossover event of all time: Secret Wars. "Time Runs Out" is an apocalyptic event that signals the end of the mutliverse. The multiverse is collapsing and where earths from parallel universe collide with our Earth, only one earth can remain. Previously, in New Avengers Volume 4: A Perfect World the Illuminati devised a plan for protecting Earth by destroying these other realities' earths as they come into contact with our Earth. The Illuminati's plans put them directly at odds with the Avengers, and Captain America has vowed to stop them (see Avengers Volume 6: Infinite Avengers ). The companion 'prequel' issue-- Avengers World Vol. 4: Before Times Runs Out -- promises to fill in the gaps of this story and reveal the details of the months that lead up to the current situation where the Avengers find themselves at war with the Illuminati as the clock counts down to the ultimate end of reality.

Three different teams are working on a solution to the problem of world-ending incursions into our reality; however, through mistrust, misunderstanding, and downright hostility the three teams are also working against each other. The Avengers are hunting the Illuminati, while the combined brainpower of Beast and Mr Fantastic keep them one step ahead of Captain America's crew. Meanwhile Namor has formed the Cabal with some truly bad guys in order to carry out the only known solution to the problem of the incursions: they are destroying the incoming worlds.

I loved this story and I cannot wait until the next installment. The problem is epic and there seems to be no solution in sight (short of the soul-destroying option of genocide that Namor and his Cabal have devised). The intrigue is thick! Plots and scheming, alliances formed and betrayed, the twists and turns build suspense! Time Runs Out continues in Avengers: Time Runs Out Volume 2

About the Author
Since 1965, Roy Thomas has been writing for movies, television, and especially comic books. With notable runs on Avengers, X-Men, Conan the Barbarian, Incredible Hulk, and Star Wars; he served as a Marvel editor from 1965-80 and editor-in-chief from 1972-74. He currently edits Alter Ego and writes two online Tarzan strips as well as the occasional comic book. He and his wife Dann live in South Carolina.

A good example of early 1970's "relevance"

A few months ago, I enjoyed (and reviewed) Avengers vs. Thanos, a collection of stories from the late 1970's involving many of Marvel's heroes battling the mad Titan. One of the central characters was Warlock and that got me interested in this collection of his earlier adventures. It is not as strong as what Jim Starlin would produce in just a few years, but it is a nice example of the "relevant" comics of the early 1970's. Roy Thomas in his introduction notes that Jack Kirby's Fourth World and the musical Jesus Christ Superstar were big influences on Warlock ( I could appreciate this as I recently read a collection of Kirby's Forever People). Warlock is a bit stilted and there is a feeling that it's playing too much to the college kids (indeed, a Bullpen Bulletin is reprinted that notes Marvel's popularity on campuses). Nevertheless, I did like it and thought that there were some intriguing concepts, particularly the conception of the High Evolutionary as creator of Counter-Earth, uncertain of the wisdom of his action and wondering if he should just give up on his world. Warlock's arch-foe the Man-Beast figures in a climax that would have really hit home at the time of Watergate and the ending is a moving one that gets an assist from a Ray Bradbury quote.

This original 'Warlock' series by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane was a little before my time, since my days collecting 'Marvels' as a kid extended mainly from the very late-1970's into about the mid-80's..... but having been a huge fan of Jim Starlin's 'Cosmic' Universe = I first knew of 'Adam Warlock' as a mysteriously-powerful cosmically-aware reluctant-warrior endlessly searching for a measure of 'peace & tranquility' but rarely finding it....... sometimes teaming with Gamora, Pip, even Spiderman, the Thing and the Avengers against the awesome-annihilator Thanos! (and earlier, facing his own mirror-image evil-incarnate self from the future – the 'Magus')

But this volume collecting 'Adam Warlock's earliest outings beginning with 1972's 1st issue of 'Marvel-Premiere' featuring the awesome 'Power of Warlock' with script by speculative-fiction aficionado Roy Thomas and fantastic Artwork by the Legendary Gil Kane seemed way ahead of its time, in terms of more mature philosophical-spiritual perspective and storytelling (taking a page form Stan Lee's earlier 'Silver Surfer' series but perhaps being even more 'relevant' to the tumultuous-times of 1972 when our country was still in the midst of seemingly endless War in Vietnam, along with continuing Civil-Rights struggles at home, with Watergate looming not far-off)

As other Amazon reviewers have already accurately and articulately stated below (and as mentioned in Roy Thomas' introductory-essay) Adam Warlock's original adventures on Counter-Earth were in some ways meant to function as the ultimate 'morality-play' = pitting the uncorrupted/ untarnished Soul of 'Warlock' = whose very name completely contradicted the fact that he was meant to serve as a nearly ‘pure’ Christ-like protector and guardian of the higher-aspirations and compassionate-civilized aspects of newly-created duplicate Counter-Earth = a planet reborn to represent a 'second-chance' for humanity to redeem itself, i.e. this time perhaps successfully resisting the violent self-serving instinctively-cruel inclinations of the 'Man-Beast' and his feral minions who connive to overrun new-Earth and once again undermine any higher aspirations of its human inhabitants and defeat/humiliate its noble guardian Adam Warlock (and all that he stood for).

What an ambitious concept by Roy Thomas...... to bring such a seriously thought-provoking scenario to mere comic-books (which touched on not only the topics of 'War & peace' but also religion/belief and the human yearning for genuine meaning...... searching for answers and authentic 'goodness' in an increasingly chaotic, senselessly violent World). But Roy Thomas' original vision might have been a bit too ambitious within the boundaries of a mere comic-book after-all (especially in those earlier days) = looking at it today, you almost wish that Thomas & Gil Kane (and publisher Stan Lee) could have expanded the first Adam Warlock Story into a full-fledged Graphic Novel (but sadly the first 'Power of Warlock' issue might have been too far ahead of its time...... because it would be another full-decade before graphic-novels highlighting more daringly philosophical-controversial (and topical) scenarios became more commonplace, e.g. the X-Men: "God Loves, Man Kills" (circa 1982) and of course Alan Moore's "Watchmen" (which did in fact begin as a multi-part comic in 1986).

Issue #2 of 'Marvel-Premiere' and the first 3 to 4 issues of 'Warlock's stand-alone series briefly kept-up the momentum generated by that first appearance/Issue of Marvel Premiere = mainly due to the exceedingly high-quality of Gil Kane's masterfully Dynamic (but quite 'realistic') Artwork....... but sadly, issues #5-8 although still 'above-average' by comic-book standards (with an intriguing 'twist' on the Reed Richards + Doctor Doom characters) seemed to lose the authentically spiritual-philosophical underpinnings of the earliest Adam Warlock stories...... the Hulk issues included herein are a bit stronger and more cohesive.

Of course, it was not until Jim Starlin revived 'Adam Warlock' a couple years later in the pages of 'Strange-Tales #178' and then Warlock’s own all-too-brief continued series (and those two great Annuals from 1977: especially the one featuring 'Avengers') that the true 'power' of Warlock was fully-reborn-realized (but Starlin's amazing Works are featured in separate collections from this one).

Although Starlin envisioned Adam Warlock as a more complex and ‘cosmically-aware' character (who struggled with a 'dark-side' to his seemingly unlimited powers), but Warlock remained a mostly 'noble' character still searching-reaching for genuine signs of the authentic ‘good’ (endlessly seeking this priceless rarity in his travels thru the multiverse) = a profoundly 'reluctant' warrior who at times would much rather retreat inwards toward the 'peace & harmony' located within the infinite World of his own Soul-Gem (with compatriots Gamora and Pip by his side!)

But without a doubt the first few appearances of 'Adam Warlock' by the creative-team of Roy Thomas and Gil Kane reflected an auspicious beginning for a truly unique reluctant hero....... with nearly limitless powers and equally limitless potential = still a mainstay in the vast Marvel-Cosmic-Universe (burning-question: will he be featured in the next two Avengers films along with adversary Thanos... need to wait and see!)

Savior in spandex

This short-lived series might well have been called "Jesus Christ Superhero" -- a fascinating concept to be sure, but constricted by what comics would allow in the early 1970s. Still, the first few issues are solid, with dynamic art by Gil Kane & basically good writing by creator Roy Thomas. If it's not as polished as Thomas' other work, I imagine part of that was due to the new & uncertain ground he was treading. On one hand, he didn't want to offend more religious readers; on the other hand, he didn't want it to be just another superhero comic. While the first stories quite clearly use the New Testament as a template (albeit gingerly), they're also very much of the time -- generational conflict, a desire to change the world & question the status quo at every turn. For readers today, much of this will probably be rather awkward & a little corny -- but it was quite daring for back then, and should be read in that light.

Perhaps it was simply a couple of decades too soon ... but there's also a notable decline in art & writing after Kane & Thomas leave the series. This really needed a single, ongoing creative force behind it to even have a chance of working. Once that was lost, too much standard superheroing came in, the religious & political aspects became much too heavy-handed (even though I largely agreed with the message), and the series was soon cancelled, to be concluded in 3 issues of The Incredible Hulk. Luckily, Warlock's true time to shine was just around the corner, awaiting the arrival of Jim Starlin.

So is it worth reading? I think so -- and not just as a curiosity, but as an example of unrealized potential, as well as a cultural time capsule. It would be interesting to see some gifted creator of today take the same beginnings & run with them. That's not likely to happen, but it's something to think about ... what if? Meanwhile, these stories remind us of a time when superhero comics were open to remarkably wild possibilities -- recommended for that reason!

Protein Bars at Home

This book is an awesome resource for anyone who doesn't have specialized dietary restrictions (i.e. gluten-free, paleo, etc.), but who wants to save a lot of money on protein bars. The recipes in here sound delicious, and I'm surprised about the complaints over certain ingredients being there - I guess it doesn't clearly warn that it's not compliant with fad diet A or health related diet restriction B, but it didn't claim it was either.

Bottom line, if you have no restrictions that keep you from eating a store-bought protein bar, then you will be totally safe and enjoy the recipes in here (and probably avoid a lot of weird preservatives while you're at it)! I would appreciate some dietary info/protein content, but i guess that's the beauty about eBooks like this - authors typically update them based on feedback, and can do so easily.

Love these recipes for protein bars

Wow these protein bar recipes are so good! So simple not that much or involved to make and you know they are pretty healthy for you because you made them yourself.
I'm right into my fitness so these were great for my diet. Nice and quick to eat on the go too.

No information on amount of protein, etc per bar

While the recipes are good, there is NO information on number of servings, amount of protein, calories, fat, etc per bar. So virtually a worthless book. Will rewrite and upgrade review if the information is added.
