Still s good read!

This book is, of course, a familiar and well loved classic by Jules Verne. I decided to read it (after over 50 years!) as a way to maintain my rather rusty (assez rouille ?) French. I am glad that I did, because this is still an amusing story and Verne uses a reasonable vocabulary that did not have me looking up words too often. That was fortunate, because I found the interface to the dictionary somewhat clunky; I assume that is the dictionary's problem, not Jules Verne's. Deep probing of the characters' psyches is not part of Jules Verne's style. Rather, they are exemplars of certain quirks, especially quirks associated with "national character" such as English reserve (Fogg), French all-around Coolness (Passepartout), etc. His depiction of Americans and America is reminiscent of Mark Twain, a contemporary. Overall, I enjoyed this book, enough to get the complete works (! ) of Jules Verne, which also is available from Amazon.

A Real Page Turner

It is a brilliant book, the subject of which is not impossible. It is one of those realistic fictions which Jules Verne had mastered, just like most of his other books it grabs you and pulls you along. A real page turner even for a teenager of the 21st century for me.

About the Author
Barb Jacobs is the series co-creator and worked with Steven Philip Jones on the story and script. She also provided the fantastic art and letters for the series and consequential graphic novel. Barb is also the talent behind the popular and critically acclaimed Xylia Tales. Barbara has also done cover and interior illustrations for the fantasy anthology Fantasy Readers Wanted. Steven Philip Jones has written over sixty graphic novels and comic books including Curious Cases of Sherlock Holmes, the original series Nightlinger and adaptations of Dracula, several H. P. Lovecraft stories, and the 1985 film ReAnimator. Steven is also the author of several novels and nonfiction books including the Clive Cussler Adventures: a Critical Review, Comics Writing: Communicating with Comic Books, King of Harlem, Bushwhackers, The House With The Witch’s Hat, and Henriette Hex.

This is a hidden gem of a story, with great artwork and is a real treat to read. I stumbled across this years ago, and was instantly hooked. A simple, yet engaging fantasy adventure tale that's great for all ages.

The artwork resembles that of Wendy Pini's from Elfquest (from the latter-half of her Original Quest days), and that style is what first caught my eye when I saw one of these issues on the shelf at my local comic shop.

From a production standpoint, however, I must reluctantly admit to being slightly disappointed in the collection itself. Unlike the standard North American comic-book sized trades, this book is a bit smaller, measuring a mere 6 by 9 inches. This reduction in size does a disservice to Barb Jacobs' gorgeous artwork, and some of the detail and crispness appears mildly diluted as a result, especially when compared to the pages in the original comic issues.

Another curious oversight is the absence of the title written along the spine. When it's sitting on my bookshelf, all I see is a plain green spine; there's nothing to indicate "Talismen: Return of the Exile" unlike their illustrated prose novel "Talismen: The Knightmare Knife" (also recommended, by the way). I understand that there were a number of production delays/issues in getting this collection made, and that's unfortunate. Despite any production imperfections, they should in no way detract from your overall enjoyment of the story or artwork.

Unless you want to hunt through back-issue bins, this is the only way to enjoy this story for the time being, and in my opinion, it's still worth it. I've seen some follow-up storyline and artwork online, but it's getting harder to track down. I highly recommend picking this up and getting sucked into the characters and their world. More, please!

A Revival of a Fantasy long Lost

Talismen: Return of the Exile is a web comic series that was, and is still a fantastic read. I came across this series during my college years in '06, and fell in love with both the story, and the art by artist Barb Jacobs and writer, Steven Phillip Jones; reading pages from the very beginning to its sudden conclusion. For readers of fantasy stories, I encourage you to give this series a try. Now, as for the book in question...

Mine came in perfect condition, as a nice smooth quality cover, with the artwork I know so well. Each page contained crisp quality work of memories that I used to digitally press forward to proceed towards the next piece of art. Each page I read through was letting me relive what was lost so long ago. Each chapter has been nicely organized as four parts, each with a mini frame of the cover work representing it. The story leads you into the shoes of the main character: Ollie Steele, who goes from dealing with inescapable terrorist capture, to being transported to a realm of fantasy and magic, where he is approached by the elven girl Astrina, and is readily welcomed by its inhabitants. Unbeknownst to him, he must fulfill his destiny as one of the Exiles of legend. The story mixes with sprinkles of comedy, a bit of cliche romance, and suspense, filled with action following close by. This leads to some rather cool scenes that definitely shows Barb Jacobs' talent as an artist.

And with that, we now come to the negatives:

The first thing I noticed was that the epilogue takes a hit in the image quality department. After I've been spoiled with all the high quality art this graphic novel was displaying, Jacobs' work becomes degraded as it looks as though I'm turning through pages of low resolution prints. The second thing that disappointed me, was that the web comic technically has 5 chapters, before it was eventually ended. This book only contains the first four chapters of the series, and as current articles talked about this series' revival as a graphic novel, they mentioned it "concludes the story line and bring it together." I was disheartened to learn otherwise as I finished the book, as chapter 5 introduced integral characters to the story, who were only mentioned by name in the previous chapter. Unfortunately, these points are where the book loses its perfect score.

Overall however, this was a very enjoyable book, and worth the buy. I am glad to support Barb Jacobs' work. Talismen: Return of the Exile has potential within it, and it is my truest wish that Jacobs continues this story in the future and gives it the conclusion it deserves.

He tests out his theoretical framework by bringing it up against cases that challenge it, such as abstract comics, digital comics and shojo manga, and offers insightful reflections on these innovations.

In addition, he includes lengthy chapters on three areas not covered in the first book. First, he explores the role of the narrator, both verbal and visual, and the particular issues that arise out of narration in autobiographical comics. Second, Groensteen tackles the question of rhythm in comics, and the skill demonstrated by virtuoso artists in intertwining different rhythms over and above the basic beat provided by the discontinuity of the panels. And third he resets the relationship of comics to contemporary art, conditioned by cultural history and aesthetic traditions but evolving recently as comics artists move onto avant-garde terrain.

So much to love and hate

I have always admitted to having a distinct bias towards the X-Men. Other than Transformers, which was my first entry point to comics (followed swiftly by the more European comics of Asterix and Tin Tin) it was the X-Men that have always held my attention. From the 90s cartoon series which regressed my teenage years through to Ultimate X-Men which pulled me back into real comics in the early 2000s, I have immersed myself in all things X, pretty much to the point of ignoring anything else existed. It was not until the Avengers film, and to some extent Iron Man, that I really opened my horizons and explored other comic series. Which makes what I have to say all the more surprising; currently the X-Men universe utterly sucks.

Please do not misunderstand me, this does not mean that all the X-comics themselves are bad, admittedly most of them are, but it is the entire concept of them which is being dragged through the dirt recently. Unlike the ‘Avengers’ side of the universe, and especially recently the Spider-Man niche, there has been absolutely no concept, direction, progression or even the merest hint of development, other than the death of Wolverine (which frankly is equally Avengers related as well). To give a specific example the issue I am ostensibly reviewing is part of one continuous arc from Original Sin last June. Even for Bendis that is slow storytelling on a level bordering ridiculous. To give an example from just one tiny aspect of the Avengers world, Thor has in that time, become unworthy, lost an arm, been usurped by a woman, found his sister, attempted to be killed by his sister, forgiven his brother, cast out his brother, found his father, discovered an 8th realm, found Thorr’s hammer because he was unworthy, jumped forward 8 months in time, been involved in a bromance with Hyperion, etc – you get my point.

‘Something’ happened in this book that is far more important than what it was that specifically happened. Just because I hated the changes does not mean that other people will not be jumping for joy and despite the fact that the final page infuriated me, I loved that it caught me out and did not do the predictable ending. So what I can only ask is for more of the same; more momentum going into Secret Wars; more changes; more story development; but less of killing my favourite characters!

This middle third of the original Mirage Volume 2 comics are the best that the volume had to offer! Baxter Stockman returns as more than a one-note shallow mad scientist to seek revenge against April O'Neil and the Turtles, and the four brothers are finally reunited as they try to take down the cybernetic menace. Definitely not a volume to miss!

Since I am new to comics, I didn't have a collection. So after I picked up the ultimate collection I wanted to try and get the rest of the Mirage TMNT comics. the TMNT classics series is where I found them, well most of them I think. The stories are great and this set is in color.

A great book at a great price

Wow! This book is jam-packed with high-quality golden age adventure stories. All killer, no filler, as they say; although there are great ads for products of the period that will make you chuckle. Taking over a title that was created and drawn by the great Alex Raymond must have been a daunting task, but writer-artist Paul Norris, who also illustrated the early comic book adventures of "Flash Gordon," is more than equal to the task. Few artists of this era had his flair for composition. Also, the color registration is very sophisticated for the era. Originally priced at $42, Amazon and UP History and hobby loped off $11 making this five-book collection all that much more of a bargain.

Little light for the price

I feel like this is missing some content. The format doesn't follow the previous books and I heard leading up to it there was suppose to be more content. Plus $5! The story is where the story was going and is fitting with the series but I recommend picking up the hard copy.

Losing the romance... Still a great series

I waited months for this volume to be released. It was supposedly to be available in September, then it was moved to November and only as of last week has it actually been released. I immediately purchased my copy because I've been a dedicated fan of the 100% Perfect Girl series thus far. It has beautiful artwork and a soap opera worthy storyline.

However, volume 7, for me, was a bit of a let down. I'm surprised I didn't love it more because it is probably the darkest volume so far and normally that's the best part of all stories, when there is tragedy and danger. However, I feel this volume has squashed almost all of the romance out of the series.

Jay finally confesses to Jarte that she loves him, but only seconds after making a dark deal with his half-brother Ewan that she'll sleep with him if he lets Jarte free. I'll try not to reveal too much but lets just say what ensues after is a misunderstood situation, a very depressed Jay and a dark outcome. Something also happens to Luigi (which upset me because at this point he is the one man who "loves" Jay who isn't trying to hurt her and actually respects her wishes). Jarte has become so possessive that he is looking insane (more so if you thought this already) and Ewan now loves Jay in his own twisted mind (at least he regrets what he did to her). In the end, I can see why Jay does what she does.

While all of that sounds like complaints I've become so invested in the series that I can't wait for volume 8. Dark as volume 7 was I'm pleased that the story followed through with it. Seems a lot of manwha, manga and Anime do similar situations but then suddenly the next day in the lives of the characters they are fine. In 100% we see the reprucussions of events and how people might actually react. Hopefully Wann can write some of the romance back into the collection.

I love this book series! It started off as a nice classic fairytale...but now its gone a bit darker and I love it! Great twists and romance!!! A must read...plus the cover is gorgeous!

A bit lost in translation

I definitely think some of the nuances in the dialogue get lost in translation as this version was translated first from the original Spanish into French, then English.. but it's still a touching story. The artwork is lovely and does a great job of capturing the bittersweet quality of the main character's memories.

I'm sixty-three, so this one hit pretty close to home. We watch as an elderly Alzheimer's victim's family, friends and identity fade away. Don't get me wrong, there is much humor here, particularly among the other residents of the "Retirement Home". But ultimately, this is a very sad story, tenderly told.

Armor Hunters Tie-In

Ever since the introduction of the X-O Manowar Armor, it is one of the most powerful objects on earth. As we start to realize with the Armor Hunters crossover, there is much more to this armor than creator Robert Venditti had revealed. There are other armors out there in the universe that have been hunted for the ruin they bring their wearers and everyone around them. Elite Warriors trained in combat against these living armors have now set their sights on Earth to cleanse it of the armor worn by Aric and they don't care about the collateral damage. All that is required to read of this crossover is the Armor Hunters trade reprinting the mini-series but all of the tie-in collections really add to the story.

In Armor Hunters: Harbinger, we get a collection of the 3 issue mini-series and Harbinger Wars 1 which has the first appearance of Generation Zero who are featured in this story. Because of the aftermath of Harbinger volume 5, we only have Faith and Torque from the renegades here to join Generation Zero as they gather in Mexico to help in that area. The attacks there are brutal, and the heroes are in for the fight of their lives. Written by Joshua Dysart and artwork by Robert Gill, I was happy to get another Generation Zero story arc and hope we get even more of them in Imperium (the next chapter in the Harbinger story) or even better, their own book. Harbinger Wars 1 gives a bit of an introduction and some history of the Generation Zero team if you weren't around for Harbinger Wars. I really enjoy all of Valiants titles, they put a lot of work into crafting good stories about characters you will care about and providing great artists to help tell that story.

Armor Hunters: Harbigner

This trade paperback includes Valiant’s Armor Hunters: Harbinger mini-series issues 1-3, written by Joshua Dysart with art by Robert Gill, plus the first appearance of Generation Zero in Harbinger Wars #1.
This volume ties into Valiant’s Armor Hunters event and while you can read the main story with this volume, it does provide added depth to the narrative and explains how an important piece of the Armor Hunters invasion protocol was defeated. I also feel that this volume reads well as an individual story, mainly focusing on the Generation Zero kids from Harbinger, although both Faith and Torque are also in this story.

I enjoyed getting to see what the Generation Zero kids decided to do after their newly gained freedom from Toyo Harada and his Harbinger Foundation in the final volume of Harbinger. While this story is placed within the Armor Hunters event, giving us a view into the aftermath of what happened to Mexico City and its inhabitants; it also provides the setting to showcase these kids and to give us a better understanding of their group dynamic, their individual powers, and their motivations. It is also nice to see that Faith and Torque have stayed engaged in the world with Peter in full withdrawal from society and Kris in jail.

Joshua Dysart has built up an amazing piece of the Valiant Universe, with the upcoming Imperium series focusing on Toyo Harada, I hope before too long, we get to revisit the remaining Renegades, and get to see the further adventures of Generation Zero and the mystery of the trauma-induced Psiot they discovered in the aftermath of Mexico City.

Joshua Dysart is a genius, pure and simple.

Unlike the other Armor Hunters tie-ins, which attempt to fill the gaps in the main narrative, Armor Hunters: Harbinger almost completely removes itself, instead offering a stand-alone story which is only loosely related to the other books. While the story itself is quite good, the title is a bit misleading, something that may possibly become a bone of contention among readers. Otherwise, Armor Hunters: Harbinger comes recommended.

Armor Hunters: Harbinger follows “Generation Zero,” the group of psiot children last seen in Harbinger Wars, as they go to Mexico City to assist the relief effort alongside Faith and Torque in the wake of the city’s destruction after Armor Hunters #1. As it happened, GN-GR’s blast not only decimated the city, but also left behind a swarm of alien insects.

Essentially, the story itself is almost entirely self-contained, and, truthfully, could have been completely independent of Armor Hunters with only a few minor tweaks to the plot. While this might disappoint a few readers who had hoped for a story that was more close-tied to the main narrative, it is also refreshing to read a tie-in that told a complete story on its own. Further, while the various creative teams have been careful to avoid overlap, there is somewhat of a repetitious feeling when reading Unity and Armor Hunters: Harbinger, simply because the reader is witnessing the same battles (such as the final battle in Los Angeles) over and over even if they are different parts of those battles.

screenshot-www.comixology.com 2015-01-09 09-28-08Given that Dysart had made his reputation as a writer who values characters over plot, it’s unsurprisingly that characterization features heavily in Armor Hunters: Harbinger. Since Generation Zero’s last appearance (aside from a brief cameo in Harbinger) was in Harbinger Wars, whose cast was so large that it was difficult to really get a feel for individuals, I appreciated that Dysart cast them as the leads and devoted the space to further fleshing them out. While Cronus is an anti-hero in the Peter Stanchek mode, he is depicted so that he comes across without being a copy of that character. The contrast between his power set (healing) and his personality (he says, “PEOPLE THINK THAT BECAUSE I’M A HEALER I’M COMPASSIONATE. THAT I TOOK AN OATH, LIKE A DOCTOR. I DIDN’T. I FIND CIVILIZATION RANCID AND WORTHY OF DISMANTLING”) is clever, and his idea of leadership (“[PETER STANCHEK] TOLD ME OF A FORM OF LEADERSHIP I’D NEVER HEARD OF BEFORE. HE CALLED IT DEMOCRACY. I DON’T TRUST IT. IT SOUNDS MESSY. LACKS DISCIPLINE. PANDERS TO THE WORST IN US…”) is obviously much closer to that of Toyo Harada than Stanchek. Although every member of the team is intriguing, Cronus makes the most compelling case for the case for the Generation Zero to be given its own ongoing title.

The inclusion of Congressman Serra was also a great idea. As a minor politician who has been thrust into the position of Mexican president by default, his lack of confidence and his approach towards the crisis makes for a good comparison with Cronus and Generation Zero. He also serves as a good POV character for the reader, as once alien bugs and demon dinosaurs begin to appear, it’s easy to sympathize with someone who feels completely over his head.

The only problem with the story is the resolution, which is essentially a deus ex machina ending. Through the first two and a half issues, Dysart had done an excellent job of building up the alien bugs as a difficult adversary; as a swarm they are nearly unstoppable and–in one of Gill’s creepiest visuals–have the ability to take over a human’s consciousness by invading through the mouth. However, they are defeated almost instantly in what basically amounts to flipping a psychic “off” switch. It’s a testament to how much goodwill that the series had earned prior to that that it only slight affected my opinion of Armor Hunters: Harbinger as a whole.

Robert Gill has been one of Valiant’s fastest rising artists since his debut on the second arc of Eternal Warrior. With hordes of insects and a demon, this story gives him a considerably greater challenge for him to draw, and the result is often stunning. Unlike some artists with a clean line, Gill draws with a great deal of detail. He assisted by Romulo Farajdo, whose color work in this book is fantastic. From a purely personal standpoint, the artwork in this might be my favorite of all the various “Armor Hunters” issues.

Like Armor Hunters: Bloodshot, this trade also includes another issue, Harbinger Wars #1, in order to round out the collection to four issues, and my feelings regarding this practice remain the same: I’d rather pay less for a trade that only contains three issues than have to pay for something that has already been collected elsewhere (in this case, the Harbinger Wars trade), and its rating is reduced from 4-stars to 3 to reflect this. Otherwise, this is a strong story that takes the idea of an event tie-in and really thinks outside the box to go in an interesting direction.
