About the Author
I was born in Sacramento, California where I launched my writing career by "publishing" a family newspaper. Circulation was dismal. After school, I married the love of my life. We spent years juggling children and pets while living on sailboats. All the while, I read like a crazy woman (devoured Agatha Christie) and wrote stories of my own, eventually selling to magazines and then book publishers. Now, 45 novels later, I'm concentrating on romantic suspense where my true interest lies.

Incredibly obvious plot and not researched at all

My husband and I, parents of twin girls, had a good laugh over this book

As soon as the auto crash happened and it was revealed that one of the twin brothers died and the other one had amnesia, I thought, "Oh, no, she won't go there". But she did. The "twist" in this book could be seen within the first few pages.

It's obvious the author did no research at all on identical twins. She thinks that their DNA is "damn near the same". Anyone who has had high school biology knows that the DNA of monozygotic twins is EXACTLY the same! And the error cannot be attributed to advances in scientific knowledge since the book was written in 2002 as it was common knowledge at that time.

But, despite their absolutely identical DNA, there are many, many differences in appearance, not just personality. Their voices can be different, the shapes of their faces, noses, texture of hair, etc. There are ALWAYS differences, sometimes subtle, sometimes not so subtle. Quite often one twin is smaller than the other. And the older a twin gets, the more he/she looks different from the other twin due to environmental factors. Strangers and acquaintances may have trouble telling them apart, but those who love them ALWAYS know who is who as soon as they see them or hear them. To suggest that a mother wouldn't know her own child, but a business partner WOULD recognize him is absolutely ludicrous.

The writing wasn't bad -- perhaps this author has gotten better in the last 12 years at planning her plots and researching for her books.

A sweet romance with a twist

I enjoyed this story a lot-the plot is different from the run-of-the -mill romance; the characters were believable and endearing, and the ending was satisfying. If you're looking for a good book to curl up with on a rainy afternoon, I highly recommend this one.

comic is great, seller was subpar

Comic itself is interesting and illustrated beautifully. My two stars is towards the sellars, that advertised first edition, when in fact it was a second edition. They put a barcode sticker on the comics front page. They also shipped the magazine without a backer.

Good luck Ewon

Once again, I can't say enough good things about Totally Captivated. This is easily one of my favorite series, even among (non-graphic) novels.
Ewon Jung is a 23 year old college student who has been forced into working for Mookyul, a loan shark with "movie star" good looks. And all because Ewon cheated on his ex-boyfriend Jiho, Mookyul's current lover. I hope that made sense. Book 3 starts up right where we left off. Mookyul has been pursuing Ewon with renewed vigor ever since he found out the "secret" from book 2 (and no I won't give it away). This leaves Ewon in a pretty difficult position, namely on the couch with Mookyul when Jiho walks in. Caught cheating all over again, Ewon quits his job and winds up seriously ill. In a moment of unexpected tenderness, Mookyul cares for Ewon and things between them start to turn serious.
Book 3 is chock full of the things that make this series so great. Mookyul and Ewon are as gorgeous and well drawn as ever. The dialogue is lively and entertaining. Humor and super deformed illustrations counterbalance some of the serious content. The characters are three dimensional, even the minor characters. They're distinct and easily told apart. I love them all, even the sometimes brutal Mookyul. Book 3 also includes a bit of sex though no "bits" are shown.
Finally as I've said before in my other reviews, remember that this is a Korean manhwa and therefore reads from left to right.

As a child I have always wondered what happened to the previous owner of the estate in Poland we lived in for six years. As an adult, I researched the historical facts of World War ll and their consequences. This story is the result of my quest. I have used some of the persons from my book: “The burning Train,” a biography of my life, since the story takes place in the same estate, at the same time. Otherwise, the names of the people in “The Red Pencil” are fictional; any resemblance to existing names is pure coincidence. Janka, the protagonist, is a Polish girl living on a country estate. Her happy childhood ended when the Germans invaded Poland. The Gestapo killed her father and brother. Her mother and sister were taken by the SS to a concentration camp, where her sister died. A German family moved into her parents’ estate. The family fled in the winter of 1945 to Germany with the Russians on their heels. To save Janka’s life, one of the estate workers hid her in their hut during the German occupation. Her mother then returned to the estate. After the fall of the Third Reich, the Russians dominated Poland. Janka and her mother, being aristocrats, were accused of being enemies of the people and sent to jail. They were separated. Janka never knew what her mother’s fate was. Jailed, Janka was raped and tortured. She fell in love with Boris, the commissar of the prison. He took her to his bungalow to live with him. When they were discovered, he was sentenced too hard labor. Pregnant, Janka was sent to one of the Russian Goulag camps. Her child died of malnutrition. Two years later Boris was sent to the same camp. They, together with a brigadier of the camp and another girl, planned to escape. Boris and the girl were killed. Janka and the brigadier made it to Afghanistan to start a new life.

Bravo!! Another hit!! Can't wait for book three and the movie!!

Filmed once again I am eager to read each word to find out what will happen next! I read the book in one day, not stopping until I knew what each page held! Myriam can hold your interest like no author I've read in many years, and the fact that this story is based on historical research, as well as personal knowledge of life experiences makes it so much more interesting to me! The stories she has to share are unimaginable to those of us whose lives have been lived in such ease, but she takes you right in the room with her. I can't wait for book three, and the movie that must be made, these stories equal The Diary of Ann Frank because as before she is still telling about the lives of the children that must live through the horrors of war and some how become decent human beings.

Drag Queens, Brains, and Dead Rednecks! Oh my!

If you love zombies and drag queens, and who doesn't? this is for you! Seriously though, I really did enjoy Zombie Fabulous because it is different. As much as I love the zombie genre, it's getting nearly as flooded as the vampire genre out there, and I felt this was a breath of fresh air. I can honestly say I have never seen the LGBT spin put on a zombie tale but now I have, and damn it, it's pretty cool. Gore factor was on point. The first death scene had me rolling. Just overall awesome for an indie comic. My only disappointment was the length of the story, but then I thought, "It's a comic" most people have no clue how much time it takes to produce one of these. The graphic novel/comic genre is one of the most under appreciated, all out thankless literary art forms out there. You have to not only write a compelling story but also bring it to life through illustration, all while getting paid little, if nothing at all, to do it. But there I go rambling, anyway, hats off Stephen and Aaron! Looking forward to another one!

There is a school of thought that argues that if you put two sets of clichés together, you can get something fun out of it. In the case of this graphic novel, one set belongs to "everybody's turning into Lovecraftian monsters" horror stories, and the other set belongs to "hayseeds are wacky" comedy; putting them together yields a story about a plague of hideous transformations that hits backwoodsy Conover County until a scrappy, skinny blond fellow and an irritable young woman with a big scythe dispatch it. Unfortunately, Williams' story is top-heavy with overwrought narration ("If'n a clan can be said t' be tied to a patch of ground, the Atterhulls' patch is th' one with double-wides an' beer cans") and far too many characters, and never quite finds its plot, pace or tone-is it Grand Guignol horror about the county's sins finding it out? Ghostbusters-style comedy about reluctant champions beating back the supernatural? An adventure story about a by-the-book heroic journey? Fortunately, Staples' artwork is consistently eye-catching; she steps up to the plate with some effectively grotesque zombies and tentacle-beasts, and keeps the story moving even when it doesn't make much sense.

North 40 is a graphic novel compilation of a self contained series of the same name, published by Wildstorm Productions, an imprint of DC comics. I completely missed these on their original release in 2009-2010. The creative team was writer Aaron Williams, art Fiona Staples and letters Rob Leigh. List price is $17.99 for a 144 page book, but Amazon discounts to $12.99, eligible for free shipping if you order > $25 worth of stuff (may I suggest adding The Courtyard by Alan Moore and Only the End of the World Again by Neil Gaiman as a nice Lovecraftian combination package?). In all respects it is a handsome production.

Welcome to the incredibly tedious town of Lufton. Our story begins with Robert and Dyan, a couple of misfits, reading from a book from the restricted section of the library at Vidette U (of course, not too restricted or we could never kick start the plot, right?). Unfortunately for everyone concerned, even the simple act of reading the text allows a tentacled thing to manifest and spread its influence across the entire county. We then meet some other principle characters: Sherriff Morgan, Wyatt, Amanda, Luanne. Suddenly everyone is overwhelmed by some sort of noxious miasma and about this time absolute mayhem grips the community as everyone awakens from unsettling dreams at 6:33 AM the next morning. Some residents of Conover County have transformed into horrible hybrids of humanity and monstrous things, and busy themselves devouring or dismembering anyone they encounter. Of course any semblance of a plot is just that; what follows is a series of very loosely linked vignettes, where horror piles on top of horror. We more or less follow the adventures of our protagonists. Wyatt, an outsider with a loser for a father escapes several close calls, Amanda meets a witch who puts her on the path of destiny to save the world, Sherriff Morgan proves remarkably resolute and Luanne has some sort of second sight. A big dance is planned at the high school and whoever shows up probably won't like what's on the menu. Dyan periodically shows up trying to induce further carnage while Robert was just a harmless geek and his been exerting his influence to stop Cthulhu's aura from spreading beyond the borders of the county. It turns out all of our new friends have an important part to play, trying to prevent Cthulhu from rising again. The witch and the sheriff know each other from way back, and each chooses a protégé to help out (Amanda and Wyatt). If it sounds a bit confused, it's because it is.

I really liked this book but don't expect a very tight plot like Fall of Cthulhu from Boom Studios. Mostly the story is an excuse for some pretty ghoulish goings on, each no more than a page or two. What makes it a really terrific read is the snappy dialogue, which was quite fun, and the outstanding art by Fiona Staples. Everything is amazingly attractive to look at. I can't really choose a favorite panel but the image of Cthulhu and the baby with bulldog ant pincers were both quite effective. Eventually the world is somewhat saved but Dyan and Robert are still in the aether, working at cross purposes, and the door is open for potential sequels. North 40 is entertaining Cthulhu mythos eye candy, just about perfect if you don't tax your brain too much by thinking about it very hard.

This was recommended to me by amazon. So I wasn't really looking for it specifically, but I'm glad I found it. It made for an odd read - I kinda tilted my head sideways while reading it, as if looking at it from a different angle would make it make more sense. To no avail. It's a weird story for sure - you're just thrown right into the deep end. But for some reason I love it. I dig the art, and the story somehow got its claws into me. Good read.

come for Cthulhu, stay for Fiona

If you're casting about for something out of mainstream in the comic book medium, have a try at Aaron Williams' PS238 I With Liberty and Recess for All, Nodwick Chronicles: Volume 1: A Henchman Collection of Nodwick 1-6, or Full Frontal Nerdity You've Got the Touch. Or maybe even this one, NORTH 40. It's a 6-issued limited series. It's a Wildstorm joint, and since Wildstorm is an imprint of DC Comics, I guess NORTH 40 is within spitting distance of mainstream. But it still has separation from its cape & cowl brethren.

Somewhere along Interstate 40 North lies the backwoods Conover County, site of Aaron Williams' stab at Southern Gothic. In its city of Lufton two students meddles with dark forces beyond their ken. They crack open one of them books and invoke a spell on a whim. That's all it takes for hell to bust open. The residents fall into an odd slumber and wake up to find that most of them have turned into monsters and Conover County mystically sealed off from the outside world.

Not everyone's become a nightmarish creature. Not everyone indulges in brutal depravities. Some remain normal and these have no choice but to hunker down and hope to elude becoming the latest victims. A select few gain incredible abilities. Wyatt Hinkle, dirt farmer's son, develops superhero-type powers. Amanda Walker, young half-breed outcast, becomes a witch's apprentice. She slings a rusty scythe. It's up to her and Wyatt and old-as-dirt Sheriff Morgan to impose law and order on this suddenly demonic wasteland.

It's sort of like H.P. Lovecraft meets The Dukes of Hazzard. If you're into weird, freaky, chaotic goings-on, then this is your cup of newt. All sorts of monstrosities dot this landscape, and I guess this is when I trumpet Fiona Staples' art. Today she's doing big things with Brian K. Vaughan on Saga, Vol. 1. NORTH 40 published in 2009-10 and, back then, Staples' lines were more "indie,' didn't look as polished as it does in SAGA. But she still had that expressive style and that vivid energy. And whenever Williams chooses to escalate the horror, Fiona nails those scenes every time. Her monsters are memorably grotesque. She does justice in interpreting damned souls and zombie uprisings and junkyard robots and a vast primordial evil seeking a foothold into our world. A quote from Aaron Williams in an interview: "It's a real thrill seeing another artist's interpretation of your ideas. She also draws some incredible monsters. There are several that come from a salvage yard in Conover County that I can't wait for everyone to see. She captures the people and setting so well."

NORTH 40 oozes this genuinely creepy vibe and generates the occasional disquieting frisson. The set-up is tantalizing and the ending open-ended enough that a follow-up series seems inevitable. Where the story falls apart a bit is in the lack of character development. There actually are too many people in the cast, and it's confusing in spots trying to keep track of the secondary characters. Williams may have gone overboard with the local jargon. The hick colloquialisms employed in the omniscient narration were making my brain bleed. I wish the folks of Conover County had more of a WTF reaction to what's happened to them. They're so blasé, as if Cthulhu drops in habitually for a jug of moonshine and the latest listen from the Oakridge Boys. I had to work some to get invested in the story. But, mostly, I love the unsettling mood of the story and Fiona's art. I very much want a sequel.

Cute, funny, sincere, and happy

I continue to adore this cute and happy series. Even when events become exaggerated — as here, where the young couple go picnicking and end up trapped in the wilderness after falling off a cliff — the love between gorilla-ish Takeo and fairy-ish Yamato is inspiring and heart-warming.

Their innocence is adorable. Yamato’s friends assume that the two have lied to their parents so they can spend the night together, but the sincere young couple is more concerned with each making sure the other is happy. They’re so encouraging and optimistic, like a paired version of Yotsuba. Instead of being fearful at their stay outdoors overnight, they appreciate how much better they can see the stars away from the city, and Takeo enjoys reassuring Yamato he’ll protect her.

The second chapter takes on the classic manga trope of the beach trip. Everyone’s obsessing over what to wear — the boys want to see the girls in their swimsuits, and Yamato wants to look cute for Takeo. The problem is that Yamato and Takeo hilariously freak out when they see each other in beachwear. Then the couple tackle jealousy, when an old friend of Takeo turns up, and plan for a college future together. That’s also the chapter where Takeo’s parents meet Yamato and go overboard showing how happy they are.

It’s the small touches that entertain me, whether it’s a panel of Takeo looming over Yamato, waving his arms around to keep her from being bitten by mosquitos, or the scene cuts to Takeo’s parents, totally unconcerned that their son is still out because “he’ll be home eventually.” My Love Story!! isn’t like any other manga I read, and I like it all the more for that. I don’t know how this series could be any cuter. Or any sweeter. This series is pure sugar.

Takeo and Yamato go on a couple of dates in this volume, and they’re full of vanilla sweetness. Even their worries and mess-ups and miscommunications are humorous and adorable. Takeo is such a good guy, and he loves Yamato, and wants her to stay unharmed and good. She loves him just as much, but she is also more open about wanting to move their relationship further, even if Takeo doesn’t notice. Neither one of them has a dirty thought in their heads.

It’s adorable.

But even as the story focuses on them and their relationship, there’s plenty of room to showcase Takeo’s parents and Sunakawa, including a celebration for his birthday. They have so much happiness they can’t help but spread it around.

I’ve found that I really like Sunakawa, and maybe even relate to him. And Takeo’s parents are humorous, and so fitting to have raised Takeo.

This series is just a delight, and I love it.

OMG! Soooo adorable. Takeo and Yamato learn to deal with their heart-thumping feelings for each other, especially with physical contact. These two are so naturally innocent it is such a pleasure to see their budding romance as they discover the pure joys of love. We can see that Yamato while more pure in the ways of the world, is also more bold in being open about them. I adore these two and would say they are my absolute favourite manga couple at this time! Now I'm up-to-date with this series and ready for volume 5 coming out soon.

The Foundation is Laid Bare

In this Volume, our author takes us through the peaks and valleys of the first story-arc where we meet our main players. Here, the protagonists, the antagonists and all of the supporting cast are brought under magnification for a rather intimate inspection of all the fragments that makes them a whole. We learn about the influences from various cultures, pop or otherwise, that helped to flesh out these beloved characters. From James Bond films to Aladdin and from timeless classics like Animal Farm to The Lost World of Sinbad; there is revelation upon revelation from each inspired artifact that has melded into such a cohesive narrative that is the epic Dragon Ball tale. But this exploration doesn't stop there, we also delve into the backdrop that underpins all of our character's adventures; we sift through information about the vehicles in the Dragon World, the clothes, the architecture and every other trivial tidbit that adds to a more richly invigorating experience whenever we encounter this story; whether it be in every re-read or multiple viewing of the manga and/or anime, respectively.

For any admirer of stories this scope of work is indispensable. We are rewarded with a comprehension that lends itself to build bridges across boundaries of ethnicity, time, region, etc. and adds to the way we communicate ideas and passions by the way of our chosen media outlet. LOVE IT!!!

This book is so freaking amazing! I've learned a lot of things about Dragon Ball and it has seriously made me look at it in a new way. I always knew that Dragon Ball wasn't just about the fighting, but a lot of spiritual things as well, but this book made me realise more of that. Absolutely adore it. Thank you Derek Padula for writing this!

If you want to set healthy, realistic goals to lose weight, I highly recommend this book. And it offers another free book! There are studies about how other diets compare and medical processes that are simplified (or demystified :)) I found exactly what I was looking for and more.

Great info

I've gone back and forth on many diets. Now that my doctor told me I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, I really need to lose some weight. I've always done well on low carb diets, but had a hard time following them. This book laid out the info for me on how to follow one and be successful. The best part was the recipes. I am not a creative person when it comes to cooking, so this was most helpful. The turkey stuffed burgers was one of my favorites!
