Instant Nostalgia At A Price That Can Not Be Beaten

Dated space operas but wonderful reproductions. Pulp Tales Reprints has provided a very nice service by making these comics available once more. Both "Earth Man On Venus" and "Attack On Planet Mars" are adaptations of novels inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter. "Earth Man On Venus" was adapted from the novel,"The Radio Man" by Ralph Milne Farley in 1951 by Avon Periodicals. The tale is familiar to anyone with a passing knowledge or Burroughs' work. Studly inventor Myles Cabot, while experimenting with matter transference, accidentally projects himself to Venus. Before long, he escapes his enslavement to the giant ant overlords of the second planet and pledges his love to a beautiful, almost human, princess. You know exactly how it is going to turn out after the first page, the fun comes in the marvelous illustrations. This is a 1950's comic book on modern paper with all of the original colors and text. An occasional word blurs into illegibility but that is the fault of the original material, not the restorers. The second tale, "Attack On Planet Mars" was adapted from Ray Cummings "Tarrano The Conqueror." by Avon Periodicals, also in 1951. Cummings is best remembered today for his "Girl In The Atom" series of tales, among the very first speculative fiction about microscopic worlds orbiting the atom. In this adventure, the despot Tarrano seizes power on several worlds at once. Soon he is threatening earth. Will he succeed? Along the way we meet Martians, a Venusian princess, and Tarrano's old flame, an earth girl, In this one the fun comes from the dated view of the future that gave comic books of the fifties such wonderful charm. Included as well, for no particular reason, are two short fillers. Both would be right at home in any spooky comic book of the era, such as "Tales From The Crypt". Instant nostalgia at a price you just can't beat.
