Not my normal reading fair...
By Corey Hodgdon
Paul Kupperburg is one of my favorite comic writers and with a Rob Kelly illustration I couldn't pass this up. I don't usually read romance stories so I don't know if this is the "normal" fair or not. It didn't live up to what I imagine romance stories to be so that was good. My only complaint was that some of the stories were too predictable, but when you only have a few pages to write a story that's to be expected. I really enjoyed the Catcher In the Rye story as well as the hypocrisy of the couple in the last story. All in all this is a fun read and opened my mind to checking out more romance comics!

There's a reason why this guy killed Archie Andrews...
By Rich M.
Because everyone's wanted to do it! Nah, not really. Paul Kupperberg just managed to work in an major selling point for a comic book with a masterfully crafted story. Don't tell him that, of course. And he's done the same with Charlton Neo Media's newest title, Secret Romances. This book is what Charlton Comics would be doing if there were still in business and the loan sharks needed to be paid. The artwork is top-notch, especially leading with the cover by comic book industry legend Jose Luis Garcia Lopez. The stories are almost what you'd find in the long defunct romance comic genre. But not quite. These are updated tales for a new century; each one is a well-written and staged little vignette into true modern romance, and Senor Kupperberg's managed to cover all the angles. I think the text story is my personal favorite from the issue.

This is a good, old-fashioned comic book. Sure, it might be a little more on the adult side in the situations, but I heartily recommend this one to ANY and everyone!

Paul Kupperberg and his very talented artists deliver an amazing variety of stories
By Kevin Halter
Paul Kupperberg and his very talented artists deliver an amazing variety of stories, that as some have mentioned, don't fall into the typical fare of romance offerings...and for me that is one of the reasons for the five star rating for the book. The stories range from the slightly disturbing to the tragically poignant...highly recommended.

A modern classic to keep in the library
By A Customer
Although the synopsis as written here is actually the plot line to Nancy A. Collins' book "Wild Blood", "Sunglasses After Dark" is one the best vampire novels I've ever read. Sonja Blue is a very complex and sympathic character in the same manner as LeStat and like the early Anne Rice vampire novels, you find yourself getting mental impressions from the detailed story lines long after reading the book. This is definitely one to keep and read 2 or 3 times.

Dark Fantasy at it's best!
By A Customer
Sonja Blue is without a doubt one of the best Vampires in literature today. The story is a masterful work that captures the reader and drags his down into the "Other's" dark realm where nothing is what it seems.

Best Vamp Book Ever
By A Customer
I have never been the type who went for reading the adventures of werewolves & vampires, etc., but Nancy Collins Sonya Blue series was able to persuade me otherwise. I first read Sunglasses in college and found that not only did I like it, but could not put the book down. Sonya Blue is definitely nothing like that OTHER well known vampire writer's protagonist, LeWuss, I mean, well, you know who I mean...Sonya Blue is unlike any vampire you'll ever read about. In the first installment, we are introduced to a badass Sonya, and Nancy Collins has a way of making the reader care about this badass. Not only is the story compelling, but if you read the subsequent Sonya Blue books, you'll see that the character development meets and exceeds all expectations. I have read all four novels in the Sonya Blue collection and simply cannot say enough positive things about the series. My favorite book happens to be In the Blood, but the reader would be doing a great disservice to himself not to read the other books.

Well written but story is implausible
By N. Baig
I liked the book because it was well-written. The heroine was ok and I liked the fact that she was not overly hysterical and emotional for the most part as a lot of Harlequin heroines are. However, it just seemed that the miscommunication was implausible. She believed it when the supposed other woman told her the hero had married her to get a child because she, the women he loves, is sterile. But that does not make sense. With today's technology it would have been easier for him to marry the woman he loves then hire a surrogate to carry their child. He is rich, after all. So, it was totally unbelievable when the H fell for something so obvious because if it was true then the other woman would not have told her of their "evil" plan before she even got pregnant.

2.5 rounded to 3 **POSSIBLE SPOILERS** Too many ?'s lingered after
By Vanessa
Dimitri apparently fell for Maddie from their first meeting. However, Dimitri is trying to settle a lot of things in order to spend more time w/ Maddie and he seems to have a problem w/ saying the ILY - well except to the OW. He never seemed to know about the serpents in his little eden either. When Maddie has finally had enough of Dimitri catering to the OW and her naïvety in believing the OW - which makes no sense when you think about it - she does a runner. Dimitri manages to track her down before she arrives at her destination, get some important info, and then use it to blackmail her in to returning w/ him. Dimitri claims that he is honorable yet he blackmailed his estranged wife, he puts this OW and her problems before his wife, and he reveals very hurtful info to Maddie just to get what he wants! The icing on this cake is that Dimitri latches on to the idea that Maddie is just a gold digger and yet claims in his thoughts that he was reluctant to grab that thought. IMHO it didn't seem like he was too reluctant. Dimitri seemed to want to bury his head in the sand as to Maddie's reasons for leaving - possibly because he is thinking gold digger - and refused to hear her true reasons for leaving.

Dimitri just runs to and fro at this OW's beck and call while claiming he doesn't go for ultimatums. Also if Dimitri claims that Maddie is so transparent then why didn't he see the pain she was in towards the critical scene. He wanted to really work at this r/s and he offered some great promises to Maddie. New life will be good and she will want for nothing (he thought she was a gold digger anyway and he gives in on this too), whatever she desires she will have (unless OW calls first), and he seems to want to cosset her and take care of her but how quickly this is forgotten in favor of OW.

OW phones and Dimitri is there when Maddie acts odd and he thinks NOTHING of her behavior. He is more in tune w/ OW and her needs. The OW has pulled this same stunt before. Maddie wants him to stay, she needs him. He won't disappoint OW he made a promise and he doesn't break them - except to his wife! Dimitri doesn't call for two days (what was he doing that he couldn't contact his wife whom he claims to love) and he is only there now because of his aunt deeming it necessary to call him. Problem being that Maddie had a scare during pregnancy once before and before he ran off to the OW Maddie had collapsed against the wall and was breathing oddly, but he seemed more concerned w/ the OW who cried wolf again!! Did I mention that he didn't bother to call home once when he left to help OW and where was he? Dimitri even used the excuse of never getting the hang of saying ILY yet he claimed it to the OW.

I think this story left me w/ some unanswered questions in regards to time frame and this whole OW stuff. It also appeared that this honorable guy was not adverse to breaking promises. It just depended upon whose promise he was breaking, and when and whom he was protecting in the breaking of them.

The Kouvaris Marriage by Diana Hamilton
Harlequin Presents # 2614 ~ March 2007

It was one blazingly hot sweaty day when Dimitri Kouvaris came upon Maddie Ryan in his neighbour's garden, and immediately he was smitten with her tatty old shorts, dirty face and freckles. He followed her home to England and informed her that in three weeks she was returning home with him to Greece as his wife! With an attraction that was explosive, Maddie couldn't fight her feelings and quickly gave in to his decree. And now three months later, Dimitri is totally stunned to come home and find a note from his wife that she's left him and wants a divorce. What Dimitri doesn't know is that his live-in Aunt has been subtly undermining Maddie's confidence, claiming she was so far beneath the Kouvaris family. And that Irini the woman his Aunt had wanted Dimitri to marry, has been telling evil stories on how Dimitri had only married her for her ability to give children, as Irini can't conceive; and once a child is born, Dimitri won't hesitate to divorce her, taking the child from her and then marrying the woman he really loves, Irini. Dimitri thinks she's a gold-digger and that now after the obligatory few months of marriage she's looking for a juicy financial settlement. So he uses a crisis with her parents to blackmail her into returning to the marriage, this only reinforces in Maddie's mind what Irini has told her.

There are quite a few plot similarities to the story I previously reviewed. Again, we have a heroine who leaves her husband before he has the chance to boot her out. One very nice difference is that we are given Dimitri's POV and we can see that for him it was love at first sight. He's in total ignorance of the evil stories Irini and his Aunt have been telling Maddie. This is a classic story where both hero and heroine could easily have cleared up their problems had they only communicated. I felt for Maddie, as she put it, she was in a catch 22 situation. Dimitri was well portrayed in his real confusion over why his wife wants a divorce. There were a few moments where I was truly ready to thworp him over the head and one cringe worthy moment near the end of the book that I wished hadn't been included. This is a fast paced emotional read and I enjoyed it very much.

Print too Small
By darket
I have been a fan of the Black Butler manga since Vol.1. and have loved each one and anxiously waited for the next to come out. Though I am starting this story, there's not a doubt in my mind this book will be just great. The four star rating is for the print size. This is the first manga that I have not been able to read the smaller print where the character mutters or makes that quietly spoken remark, but this one is terrible. Reading it yesterday, I was disappointed I couldn't get into the plot because of the print. This of course is my own opinion and would not deter anyone from buying it.

Love the new whole cursed forest storyline....
By Karissa Eckert
This was much better than the previous book in the series and I really am looking forward to this whole cursed forest/wolfman story arc that is started here.

This story continues with the whole creepy cursed forest and the strange Wolfman that haunts it. I really enjoyed the new storyline and absolutely loved the crazy Emerald witch. I am very excited to see what happens in the next volume.

Overall, I continue to enjoy our awesome regular characters and the amazing illustration throughout. I feel like this book started a much more exciting and interesting storyline than the boarding school storyline of the last few books. I would highly recommend this manga series to those who enjoy historical paranormal manga.

Happy with my purchase!
By E. Dimova
I love the Black Butler series and cannot wait for the next book to come out!
The book I purchased was in very good condition. Shipping was okay. I had purchased this book in December, so shipping was a bit slow due to the holidays, but I got it nevertheless.
I was very happy with my purchase. I was so excited to read this book that I stopped everything I was doing and gobbled up its contents. I finished the book within an hour because I was savoring everything that was in it. The next book in the series doesn't come out until July I believe so until them I will be revisiting the entire book series.

Review

“A solid grounding in the actual events of the day makes for an excellent springboard into a tale of international intrigue and adventure. There’s a big twist in the first issue that moves the story from canonical to alternative history. I can’t tell you what it is, but I can tell you it left me breathless.” —J.D. Horn, author of the Witching Savannah series

“By the time I was finished with the first installment of this three-part series (which includes a pretty shocking twist that got me checking my history books) I found myself absolutely beguiled by Tony Wolf’s story and the *ss-kicking women inhabiting its pages. Joao Vieira’s illustrations are beautiful, the story tight and enthralling. I absolutely recommend this and I can’t wait to read the next two issues.” —Paul Antony Jones, author of the Extinction Point series

“A bracing inroad into this more unusual aspect of the women’s suffrage campaign. It coincides with the resurgence of interest in the women’s suffrage movement and the ongoing fascination with Neo-Victorian studies. At the same time, the novel’s breathless pace leads, with the author’s sleight of hand, to an eerie denouement which demands us to think on beyond the pages.” —Dr. Emelyne Godfrey, author of From Dagger Fans to Suffragettes: Femininity, Crime and Self-Defense in Victorian Literature and Society

I vote for this!

This is the complete review as it appears (http://ianwoodnovellum.blogspot.com/2015/02/suffrajitsu-mrs-pankhursts-amazons.html) at my blog dedicated to reading, writing (no 'rithmatic!), movies, & TV. Blog reviews often contain links which are not reproduced here, nor will updates or modifications to the blog review be replicated here. Graphic and children's reviews on the blog typically feature two or three images from the book's interior, which are not reproduced here.

Note that I don't really do stars. To me a book is either worth reading or it isn't. I can't rate it three-fifths worth reading! The only reason I've relented and started putting stars up there is to credit the good ones, which were being unfairly uncredited. So, all you'll ever see from me is a five-star or a one-star (since no stars isn't a rating, unfortunately).

I rated this book WORTHY!

Emmeline Pankhurst was a radical political agitator for women's suffrage and women's rights. She founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) which actually established a jujutsu-trained all-female squad of bodyguards to protect her from police assaults. This graphic novel, for one price but in three parts, takes that and runs with it.

Drawn very much in the old-style of the golden era of comic books, the illustrations are evocative, well-done and rather nostalgic which makes them engagingly appropriate for the subject matter. Emmeline Pankhurst was a wild and crazy girl, and this captures that and the spirit she represented very much.
The comic is very short, only 24 pages total, which makes for a fast read, but of course for those who buy the story, there are two more episodes to come included in the original purchase price (as I understand it). One issue I took with it is that it suggests that the bodyguards were trained in Bartitsu, but this was not the case since that very personal art, invented by Edward William Barton-Wright (who is, as far as I can see, is depicted as the trainer and who was very nearly the same age as Pankhurst), largely went out of style in 1902. This is the art featured in a Sherlock Holmes story and named (or misnamed) 'Baritsu'. Suggesting it this way is actually an insult to the real trainer of the WSPU bodyguards, which was a woman named Edith Margaret Garrud. Why she was snubbed in favor of a guy in what is otherwise a strongly feminist novel, I don't know other than that the author is a proponent of Bartitsu!

The novel is set in 1914 and this too, is problematic because the WSPU ceased operations during World War One for the sake of national unity against the German threat to sovereignty and freedom. The war began in late July 1914, so the events depicted here could have taken place in the earlier part of that year, I suppose!

A charming variety of characters are included, some fictional, others not. Persephone Wright is a fictional woman of ill-repute, a “fallen woman”. Flossie Le Mar is an homage to Florence LeMar, who actually was a practitioner of jujutsu. Katharina Brumbach really was a wrestler and strong-woman. Toupie Lowther was also a real person, an avid motorist, and a practitioner of jujutsu. Judith Lee appears to be an invention of writer Richard Marsh. Kitty Marshall, a fictional quick-witted teenager and a Miss Sanderson a violent fictional character. It's doubtful this group (fictional or otherwise!) ever met.

That aside, I really liked this novel and I recommend it. Issue one features the Amazons’ conflicts with the London and Glasgow police and is out as of the date of this review. Issue two follows a month later and covers "a daring rescue mission in the Austrian Alps" (over which Toupie Lowther actually rode on a motorcycle). issue three comes out a month after that and depicts the Amazons trying to prevent a terrorist attack. Is it this that will precipitate World War One?! A ripping good yarn - and somewhat educational too!

Butt Kicking English Women!
By Bengirlxd
I picked this title for review because the title seemed really interesting to me because it had the word jitsu at the end. For any martial arts fan, jitsu is usually the ending phrase for some japanese martial arts. Little did I know that the Sufra- beginning stood for suffrage until I really began reading the book. The cover look really interesting to me as well because it has a English woman taking down a man. Did Suffrajitsu pass my expectations? Let's find out.
________

Plot: The story takes place in England during the woman's suffrage movement but with a new twist. These ladies know how to fight and retaliate against authority! It was quite interesting to read and the story was well paced. It took me a while to process the array of characters because you are put into the action from the beginning but then I was able to follow the story.

The plot is interesting and leaves enough to leave readers wanting more. I must say that it may not be for everyone(especially if you're a misogynist). This isn't the regular genre of graphic novels that I read, but it was quite interesting to me and I am sure many others not used to the genre will enjoy it as well.
__________

Artwork: It is such a pleasure to see the whole work in colored goodness. I always have respect for an artist who decides to color all of his work. It just shows dedication and love for what you do. The art style is cartoony but at the same time highly real. Characters have a general look to them but their rage and other emotions are grotesquely illustrated. It reminded me a lot of Watchmen but with a different flare to it. It was pleasant to look at and sometimes uncomfortable but in a very good illustrative way.

I think the color tones used in the work depicted the Old England vibe from the work and it did great job at immersion to the overall plot.
__________

Conclusion: Suffrajitsu is an out of the ordinary graphic novel that focuses on feminism in a serious yet comical way. Though it might not be for everyone's tastes, I encourage people to give the first issue a try to see whether this little gem is worth more reads. I certainly liked it and I'm sure most people will too.

Great, Fast-Paced Feminist Comic
By Shann Reviews
Are you a feminist? Are you also a feminist who just so happens to love comics? Then please, download this title. Before I begin, I am obligated to tell you that I got a free review copy. I was not asked to give a good review- only an honest one.

This story has an air of Inglorious B-Stards and Django Unchained; History we can only wish had actually happened. I did a little research, and there are old sketches of women who learned Baritsu as self-defense, so that immediately made me like this series all the more.
Obviously, this is an over-exaggeration of what women went through during the suffragette movement. It is action-packed, dark, and gritty. I liked the art style a lot, and I think the writing was fast-paced and it never lost my interest.

Volume One is only 24 pages long, so you can basically expect to read this in one sitting. It’s like picking up an individual comic book, only you have the option to buy this serial all at once, which actually makes it cheaper than a paper comic series. If you like Sherlock Holmes, you will most likely enjoy this.

Renew Your Vows finds any surviving Superheroes having been driven underground by the Regent including the Amazing Spider-man whose trying to keep his daughter safe, even twisting his own motto to keep her from showing her developing powers at school less the Regent come. The story feels like a bit of a more intense version of the Incredibles, but really the plot turns and things get exciting at the end of the tale. Overall, a good turn after a so-so start.

Alexandra nervously smoothed the kerchief style silk halter-top over the nonexistent bump where her baby rested under her heart.

The unaccustomed warmth of late spring had allowed her to wear the sexy outfit to boost her flagging morale. She turned to the side and surveyed herself in the full-length mirror in her bedroom. Her willowy body encased in the champagne silk hip-hugging pants and sexy halter looked no different than it had when Dimitri had left for Greece.

The week-old knowledge that she was pregnant with his child might show in her wary hazel eyes, tinted sultry green by colored contacts, but it had not yet affected the shape of her body. She adjusted the gold chain belt resting low on her hips and the multiple thin bangles she wore on her wrist tinkled like small bells as they clinked together. Then in a nervous gesture, she pulled another curling strand of her hair down to frame the soft angles of her face.

Curled and professionally bleached so many shades, it looked like rippling sunlight when she let it down, her hair was a Xandra trademark. Only right now, she didn't feel like Xandra Fortune, popular model and lover to Greek tycoon, Dimitrius Petronides. She felt like Alexandra Dupree, daughter of an old New Orleans family, convent educated and shocked to be unmarried and pregnant with her lover's child.

"You look beautiful,pethi mou."

Alexandra spun away from the mirror. Dimitri stood in the door, masculine appreciation burning in his startling blue eyes. For a moment she forgot her condition. Forgot the many truths she needed to tell him. Forgot her fears. Forgot everything but how much she had missed this man over the past three weeks.

She flew across the room and threw herself against his chest. "Mon cher, I have counted the minutes since you left!"

Strong arms locked around her in an almost convulsive movement while his body remained strangely stiff. "It has only been a month and you have been busy with work. You cannot have missed me that much."

His words reminded her how he had resented her refusal to quit modeling when they had become lovers, but she had not wanted to be any man's kept mistress. Nor had she had the option of quitting her job. She needed the money she made to support the family he knew nothing about.

"You are wrong. Nothing can keep me so occupied I do not notice your absence. A day. A week. A month. I grieve them all." She grimaced inwardly at her blatant vulnerability. Where had her sophisticated cool gone, the career model facade that had initially drawn Dimitri to her?

The first crack had appeared when he'd told her he was going to be in Greece longer than anticipated and she'd cried. After two-and-a-half weeks of morning sickness, a positive pregnancy test and her mother's horrified reaction to the news, the Xandra Fortune persona was in definite risk of extinction.

Dimitri tried to hold on to his self-control, not an easy thing around Xandra. And this was Xandra as he'd never seen her. Clingy. Almost vulnerable, but he knew that could not be true. They had become lovers a year ago and although she shared her body with a generosity that moved him, she kept her heart and parts of her life hidden from him.

Their relationship was modern and free of long-term commitment, something she'd made it clear by her actions she did not expect from him.

She pressed her body to his in blatant invitation and he laughed. "You mean you have grieved my absence from your bed, do you not?"

That was the only place he was convinced she did need him. She wouldn't let him support her, making it obvious she would rather spend time away from him than give up any part of her career. None of this, however, made it easier to say what needed to be said. In fact, he was sure it would be harder for him to say the words than for her to hear them. His sophisticated lover would not appreciate a drawn out, or emotional goodbye any more than he would.

She shook her head, stretching up to link her hands behind his neck and brushed the hair at his nape. "I missed you, Dimitri. There was no joy in cooking for myself alone, no pleasure in watching the French Open without you to mutter when your favorite double-faulted on game point."

He frowned, remembering the play. She smiled at him with a look that spelled his doom if he didn't get his news out quickly. It had already wrought an instant response in his body. "I have news I must tell you."

Her arms went stiff in reaction to the seriousness of his tone. "Can it not wait, mon cher?"

He reached behind his neck to remove her hands, but she locked her fingers with surprising force.

He clasped her wrists. "We must talk now."

Alexandra did not want to talk. She was not ready to share her news. He'd seduced her from the beginning. She'd given him her heart, her body and her fidelity, as committed to him as any wife could be. Only she wasn't his wife and she didn't know how he'd respond to his lover getting pregnant.

Fear more than desire prompted her hips to grind against him. "No." She kissed his chin, tasting the skin and letting her body absorb the return of its other half. "No talk." She brushed her unfettered breasts behind her thin top back and forth across the crisp white silk of his shirt. "First, this."

"Xandra, no." He pulled her hands away from his neck, but made the mistake of letting them go.

She tunneled under his jacket and pushed it off his shoulders. "Dimitri, yes."

He glared at her, but he did not stop her from pushing his suit coat to a pile of expensive Italian designer fabric on the floor. She smiled in approval. "I want you, Dimitri. We can talk later."

She needed the affirmation that they were two halves of the same whole before she could tell him the truth about the baby she carried and equally as terrifying, the truth about who and what she was.

He grabbed her round the waist and lifted her until her mouth was even with his own. "Heaven help me, I want you, too."

There was something about the angry tone in his voice she did not understand, but she could not focus on it for long, not with his warm lips closing over her own in overwhelming passion.

She tore at his tie while he made quick work of the two hooks holding her top together. He helped her with the buttons on his shirt. The two garments fell to the thick pile carpet together and his lips never separated from hers. He pulled her flush against his body and the naked flesh of her already aroused nipples brushed the heat of his muscular chest.

She shivered in reaction while he groaned.

"We should not be doing this."

The words registered only subliminally, planting a question as to why they should be said, but she could not consciously respond to them. She was too overwhelmed by the feel of his flesh against her own for the first time in over a month. He seemed similarly affected as his arms tightened around her until she could barely take a breath.

Seconds later they lay entwined on the bed, the rest of their clothes discarded, hungry hands touching intimate places, mouths devouring one another. They climbed to the heights together with a speed they never had before. When they tumbled into starbursts and oblivion, masculine shouts mingled with her own cries of pleasure.

Alexandra laid her hand over Dimitri's heart. It still beat with the accelerated pulse of recently spent passion. "Such a strong heart," she murmured, "such a strong man." Would the news she had to share direct that strength toward her or against her?

His body tensed as if he had some premonition of what was to come. He rolled away and ejected himself from the bed. "I need a shower."

She stared at the six-foot-four-inch sexy giant towering above the bed. Tension was emanating off him in waves.

"I'll join you."

He shook his head. "Stay there. I will be quick."

Her heart squeezed at the small rejection, but she smiled and nodded. "All right." Craven coward that she was, she gladly accepted another excuse to put off telling him her news.

He came out of the bathroom fifteen minutes later dressed in his usual sartorial elegance, but his dark hair was still damp. His choice of another business suit over something less formal made her pause.

"Do you have a meeting?"

The chiseled features of his gorgeous face were set in an unemotional mask. "Xandra, there is something I must tell you."

She scooted into a sitting position, pulling the sheet with her to shield her body from the blue gaze that had mesmerized her from the moment they met. "What?"

"I'm getting married."

Everything inside her went still. Had he said what she thought he had said? No. It wasn't possible. "M-mar-ried?"

His hands fisted at his sides, his body stiff with tension she could no longer ignore. "Yes."

She could not take it in. It had to be some kind of joke. "If this is your idea of a marriage proposal, you've got a lot to learn."

Sensual lips twisted in a grimace. "Do not be ridiculous."

"Ridiculous?" She wished her brain would start working again, but she couldn't think in the face of his words.

"You are a career woman as you've shown time and again over the past year." He slashed the air with one cutting hand. "A woman with your ambitions would not make a proper wife for the heir to the Petronides empire."

She shivered with a chill that went clear to the marrow of her bones. "What exactly are you saying?"

"I am getting married and naturally our liaison must come to an end." The sick paleness of his features did nothing to alleviate her personal pain.

"You told me our relationship was exclusive. You told me I could trust you. You would not make love to another woman while I shared your bed." She jumped out of that bed, feeling dirty and used, the passion they had shared soiled with his revelation.

Running his long fingers through the black silk of his hair, he sighed. "I have not had sex with another woman."

"Then who are you marrying?" she practically shrieked.

"No one you know."

"Obviously." Alexandra glared at him, wanting to kill him, wanting to scream, very afraid she would cry.

He sighed again. "Her name is Phoebe Leonides."

Greek. The other woman was Greek and probably meek, proper and brought up to marry money. "When did you meet her?" Though the pain was tearing her apart, she had to know.

"I've known Phoebe most of my life. She is the daughter of a family friend."

"You've known her most of your life and you just decided you loved her?"

A cynical laugh erupted from him. "Love has nothing to do with it."

He said love like it was a dirty word. Neither of them had ever spoken of love, but she adored Dimitri with every fiber of her being and had hoped that he had returned those feelings at least in some small way. Enough to make a marriage and family between them work now that she was pregnant with his child, but he quite obviously didn't believe in the emotion.

"If you don't love this woman, why are you marrying her?"

"It is time."

She swallowed convulsively. "You say that like it's something you'd always planned to do."

"It is."

Blood roared to her head, making her feel flushed and weak. She swayed.

He said something vicious in Greek and grabbed her upper arms to steady her. "Are you all right, pethi mou?"

What planet was he from? How could she be all right? He'd just told her he planned to marry another woman, a woman he'd always intended to make his wife while he'd spent the past year using Alexandra as his whore.

"Let. Me. Go," she got out between clenched teeth.

He dropped his hands, his face registering affront and she wanted to slap him so much it was an ache in her muscles. He took a single step back.

She glared up at the face that had been more beloved than any other since they met fourteen months ago. "Let me get this straight. You always planned to marry another woman?"

Indigo eyes narrowed. He didn't like repeating himself. "Yes."

"Yet you seduced me into your bed. You made me your tart knowing you never intended our relationship to be anything more than sexual?"

He reared back as if she'd struck him. "I did not make you my tart. You are my lover."

"Ex-lover."

His jaw clenched. "Ex-lover."

"Why…" She swallowed the bile rising in her throat. She couldn't ask this, but she had to. "Why did you make love, I mean …have sex with me just now?"

He spun away from her, his magnificent body sending messages to her own even amidst the carnage of their discussion.

"I couldn't help myself."

She believed him. She hadn't been able to help herself with him from the very beginning. She'd still been a virgin at the ripe age of twenty-two, but her innocence had been no barrier to the feelings he ignited in her.

He'd been shocked by her virginity, but not deterred in his resolve to make her his lover. She'd loved him and after two months of holding him off, she'd given in. It had been fantastic. He had made her feel cherished and there had been times over the past year when she had even felt loved.

"I don't believe you want to let me go." He couldn't.

"It is time," he said again, as if that explained it all.

"Time to marry the woman you intended to marry all along?" she asked, needing to make it very clear in her own mind.

"Yes."

Suddenly she felt her nakedness even through the mists of her anger and it shamed her. She had shared her body without inhibitions with this man for a year…a year during which he knew he planned to marry another woman.

She spun on her heel and headed to the bathroom where she jerked on the toweling robe she kept hanging on the back of the door. When she came back into the bedroom, Dimitri was gone. A search of the apartment revealed he had not merely left the bedroom, he had left her.

She stood in the middle of the living room and let the emptiness of the apartment sink into her consciousness until it was so heavy it forced her to her knees. Her head dropped, feeling too heavy for her neck and the sting of tears began in the back of her throat.

Soon their acid heat burned their way down her cheeks and neck to soak into the lapel of the heavy Turkish robe.

Dimitri was gone.

A great book!
By Anza Carrillo
French model Xandra Fortune's world came crashing down in a matter of hours. Her lover, Dimitri Petronides, dumps her because he is going to marry another woman, evicts her from their apartment, and denies that he is the father of her child. Heartbroken, Xandra leaves Paris and her modeling career behind, and becomes plain old Alexandra Dupree once more. She doesn't think that she'll ever see the man she loves again - until he shows up at her sister's house, offering marriage!

Dimitri knew he had made a horrible mistake when he threw Xandra out of his life, all in a misguided attempt to appease his ill grandfather. As soon as Xandra leaves Paris, he attempts to find her, but he searches for months and comes up with nothing. It's not until fate, and a little help from Xandra's brother-in-law, brings them together again that he realizes he can't allow Alexandra to leave again. He wants her, he wants their son, and he'll do just about anything to keep them in his life!

Although the little summary on the back of the book intrigued me, I didn't really think I'd like this book too well. Specifically, I didn't think I would like the character of Dimitri, throwing out his pregnant lover so he could marry someone else. But it didn't take me long to realize that there was so much more going on here than meets the eye. There's Dimitri's childhood, his perceptions of love, his grandfather's illness, and emotions that he can't put a name to. There's also Alexandra's belief that love is always conditional, that she must protect herself from being hurt, and that no one will really want her for herself.

There is not a saint in this book - the characters are both flawed, but the reader grows to love them both in spite of those flaws (or, maybe even because of them). The author manages to weave together such a convincing, wonderful romance full of ups and downs, promises and disappointments, that you can't help but fall under the author's spell. What an incredible, emotional book - I didn't want to put it down, and when I finally finished, I immediately wanted to read it again. This book deserves more than 5 stars, and is a wonderful tale of second chances.

Could have been better but he was hard to like IMO
By baltimore0502
Like many readers, I'd never even heard of this author until The Real Deal came out and everyone gushed over it. So I read TRD and I really enjoyed that book and thought I'd check out some of her other books. This one sounded intriguing so I started here. It could have been a good book, but I just never really warmed up to the "hero".

He is Greek tycoon Dimitri Petronides and he has been living with fashion model Xandra Fortune for the past year. They have a very steady but superficial relationship in which the emphasis is on living in the moment, sharing steamy sex and some level of affection. But not sharing each other's deepest thoughts, hopes, dreams or even discussion of respective families, etc. One day Dimitri's ailing grandfather imposes an ultimatum: he will not have life-saving heart surgery until Dimitri agrees to marry Phoebe Leonides the nice Greek girl he has been expected to marry. And so he must end things with Xandra to save his beloved grandfather. He figures she won't be devastated, afterall she's totally focused on her career and often put it ahead of him. No, she'll be just fine - that's what he tells himself, anyway.

But Xandra Fortune is not what or whom he assumes. She's got good reasons for working so hard but she's never shared them with Dimitri. But things change when one day she discovers that she is pregnant. She is in the midst of debating herself over how to tell him when he abruptly (and not too kindly) tells her it's over. That he's getting married and that there is no longer a place in his life for her. Contrary to Dimitri's expectations she is devastated. He walks out before guilt can overwhelm him and leaves her to her tears. Days later they meet again and she tells him about the baby. He freaks out and refuses to believe that the baby is his. The next thing she knows, she's being evicted from their shared apartment, thrown out like so much garbage.

So Xandra, whose real name is Alexandra Dupree quits her job, closes all her accounts and goes home to America leaving no trace of Xandra Fortune behind. Alexandra winds up in NYC living with her sister and brother-in-law. Meanwhile, Dimitri has had second thoughts and is now desperate to find her. But there is no trace of Xandra Fortune - it's like she's dropped off the face of the earth. Will he ever find her and if he does can he ever win her back?

Okay, IMO Dimitri would have been hard to like under any circumstance, but his character really suffers because so little of the story is told from his perspective. We get pages and pages of Alexandra's feelings and thoughts but little of his. The result is that the reader has the impression of an extremely selfish, overbearing, almost cold man determined to have his own way no matter what Alexandra wants. And that's a shame because I think he could have been yummy with a bit more development. I like Alexandra's character, though she did let him push her around a bit more than I would have liked. But she was realistic about the kind of man he was and her feelings for him and she definitely had her pride. If you like pushy alpha's maybe you will like Dimitri's character more than I, but if not, this likely is not the book for you.

Made no sense
By StScho
Jumping right in: from the get go, this book made zero sense and this is coming from someone who has been reading romance novels since (never you mind) and I have forgiven A LOT of odd plot lines in the name of HEA.
The story reminded me of those old Loveswept series circa 1980s. I saw that it was published in 2004 but that can't be right. It had to be a reprint.

First off, Xandra (Xandra?) Fortune is a French supermodel (working only in Europe) who only took a modeling job because her family's old money has turned into no money. Her mother is humiliated enough that her daughter even has to work for a living much less as a model who is practically next to being a hooker in her eyes. (WHAT?!)

So she hooks up with a billionaire Greek hottie (no complaints here) who she gives her virginity to... (huh?) Gets pregnant (hence the title) but he doesn't believe her so he throws her out of their home (not cool). Heartbroken (understandably) she goes back to her real persona as a broke American and promptly disappears. Having a change of heart, the Greek Hottie decides to look for her but cannot find her because Xandra is not even her real name and he has no idea who she really is.

Everything in this book was over the top. When I read about the restaurants they ate at, the places they stayed, the sidewalk they trampled I kept hearing Robin Leach in the background. It was BEYOND ridiculous. You can describe opulence without being so....opulent about it.

To top it all off, the Greek Hottie's grandfather refuses to make a life-saving operation until the Hottie marries a proper girl because the family needs an heir. This was the main reason why he got rid of Xandra in the first place (Xandra not being good wife material because she was a model).

If Mystery Science Theater 3000 did romantic novels, this would have been in it. If I had known the direction this story was going, I would have had a grand old time with it like those old hecklers from The Muppet Show. As it was, all I got was a headache from rolling my eyes so much.

Writing: Don't get me started.
Dialogue: Archaic (I saw fossils)
