Issue 1 of 7

This series features an alternate universe version of Superman (I guess). Each issue will have its own artist. In this first issue, Clark is about 12 and trying to get the hang of flying. That's pretty much the entire plot of this issue. The last two pages feature various news clippings, letters, and a bottle of Prozac and gives you more information than the rest of the comic, if you squint. The back page says each issue will have it's own feel to it: issue 1 is "heartwarming," issue 2 is "brutal"...

I'm in a generous mood today, so, eh, 4 stars for this one too. (I'm glad the entire series isn't going to have the cartoony artwork of this issue.)

The History of the Hunters

Where we left off: If you have read any of the other Armor Hunters series, you are aware that this group of alien Hunters have travelled to Earth in search of their quarry… the X-O Manowar armor currently bonded to Aric of Dacia. But just who are these Hunters?

Vol. 7 of X-O Manowar seeks to provide some background on the Hunters. The first three issue of the trade paperback take place in the past over an undefined period before the events we see in the main trade. The fourth issue of the trade takes place between the fourth issue of the Armor Hunters series and the Aftermath issue.

With a majority of the trade recounting past events, it is important to note that Aric of Dacia features very little in this book. The focus, rather, is on the Hunters Reebo and Malgam: who they were, their first encounter with an X-O armor, their joining the Armor Hunters and, sadly, the events behind Malgam’s infection by an armor. Robert Venditti gives us tantalizing glances into the more cosmic nature of the Valiant Universe, but only just glances as there is still much more story to be told. What is done most effectively, though, is that you can’t help but get the sense that these Hunters are fighting an increasingly losing battle.

The fourth issue than jumps forward to the current time, and is used to tie up a loose end from the whole event – Malgam’s fate. Last seen trapped in the demolished M.E.R.O headquarters during the AH: Bloodshot mini-series, we learn that there are perhaps other unidentified forces in play that have designs on Malgam.

All in all, this trade paperback is a great addition for anyone enjoying X-O Manowar and the Armor Hunters event. While it does not necessarily move the overall narrative forward much, it does provide enjoyable glimpses into parts of the Valiant Universe not yet explored, and appears to be laying the groundwork for more stories down the line!

Armor Hunters origins

who are the Armor Hunters? Why do they want to kill the armor so badly? find out in this exciting chapter! X-O himself is barely in this book, but the X-O armor, other versions on other planets are in it...but the main focus is the back story between Malgam and Reebo, a very cool sci-fi story, alien cultures...and man...I wonder if Aric's armor is really a threat to Earth and Aric...maybe the Armor Hunters are right! Valiant always has stories that make you think, make you unsure of who to cheer for...not just clearly defined good guys fighting clearly evil bad guys. great stuff! and this also includes the Aftermath of AH...a great story.

Time for a trip to the past...

Why are the Armor Hunters here? Why do they hunt the X-O armor? Why are they so jaded and war weary? How did Malgam become the mad, armor infected creature that Aric found among the wreckage in orbit around Earth? All these questions and more are answered as this volume takes a trip back to the past and follows Reebo and Malgam forward into their future of fighting, loss, and joining the crusade to save the universe from the infection of the alien armors!

While I wasn't greatly pleased that the whole of this story arc didn't involve the main character of the series until the end, the story that Robert Venditti crafted for the origins of the Armor Hunters was a joy to read and by the end of it, I was glad to have experienced it regardless. It really makes a big difference in reading the main Armor Hunters book, when you understand these characters and their motivations and histories more thoroughly. Most of all, I loved seeing the expansion of the Valiant Universe in the form or new worlds, new civilizations, and new alien races that we can now see populating space beyond Earth. This makes such a big jump for the universe itself and it was beautifully illustrated with art by Diego Bernard. The only thing that brings this down from 5 stars is that it might be a little hard to understand if you aren't reading the other Armor Hunters books. On it's own, without context, this might be a little confusing, but really, ho many people are buying this if they haven't read the X-O books up to now. And if they've read that much, they're reading the Armor Hunters event. So I'd say most will be fine. Buy and enjoy this and other Valiant titles!

This is the perfect book to give to the introvert who has been too shy and too bound up with his own self to make a success of life. I have probably read this book seven or more times, and it was an amazing help in taking me from being a shy introvert to a happy extrovert life-style. Henry Link, a New York City psychologist, presents Jesus Christ as the perfectly adjusted extrovert personality. Although originally an agnostic, Henry Link found himself more and more using the teachings and example of Jesus in his psychological counseling. And in the process, he led himself back to faith in the Master, and to a happier more adjusted lifestyle. You will never go wrong in reading this book. It changed my life for the better, and its teachings are worth their weight in gold.

Into Old Books

This author is referenced by Dale Carnegie (Win Friends and Influence People). I thought I would go to the source. It was written during the depression. The author is a professional psychologist. He does not practice religion. In his journey his life takes a strange twist. He found that his professional and scientific vocabulary was not sufficient for the needs of the people who were seeking his advice. He finds himself making recommendations to his clients using Biblical expressions. The findings of psychology were largely a rediscovery of old religious truths. " His Return to Religion was the road of a science that years before had lead him away from religion." I find that fascinating.

Religion as psychological benefit

Henry C. Link (1889-1952) was an early, modestly well-known, psychologist who, after receiving his PhD from Yale, spent most of his career doing personnel studies and market research for large corporations. Perhaps his most useful contribution to the field was mathematically proving that by sampling a carefully selected cross-section of 5000 people, a researcher could come within one percent of the result of polling the entire population.

Link was reared in an evangelical Methodist church but became an agnostic during his undergraduate years at a Methodist college. His “return to religion” was stimulated by a belief that being associated with a church was psychologically beneficial, as well as for other reasons that may strike 21st-century readers as odd. For instance, he said he attended church because he would rather lie in bed late on Sunday mornings, because going would please his parents and better influence his children, because he would have to greet people, “many of whom do not interest me in the least,” and because some of his best friends considered him a hypocrite for going. “I go, in short, because I hate to go and because I know that it will do me good.” (19)

In this brief work (which sold over 160,000 copies within two years of publication), Link opposes what he calls “introspection,” by which he means an overemphasis on bookishness and theoretical musings. He advocates participating in social life, perhaps by dancing or by playing bridge (one of his hobbies) rather than isolating oneself in solitary contemplation of serious books—including psychology, which he especially thought produced symptoms of “over-education.” (152) To find “the more abundant life,” Link recommended male patients join the CCC or even the Army. He took a dim view of New Deal liberals who believed that the federal government ought to provide for everyone’s material needs, and he argued that those who lacked emotional balance and who had failed to master their own social environments often became social workers who hastened to impose their own inferiority complex on society as a whole.

Much of the advice Link provides here is practical and sensible as well as politically conservative. Whether it has much to do with religion, I leave to the reader.

Will it blossom?

Like the title implies the story focuses on the idea of what we do with opportunities that occur in daily life. Do we take the chance to see where the road leads, do we put the effort to sow the seeds and have it blossom? Or do we choose to completely ignore? The story primary leads are Sakurai, the typical 37 year old salaryman working 12-14 hours a day at an advertising/marketing agency, and Youichi, the socially awkward 19 year old art student/manger of an old house. Despite their surface differences, you discover they have a lot of similarities as the story progresses. One pivotal similarity is that they both lost their parents young and ever since they've both been stuck in a cycle. Like stated in the synopsis, the two first meet when Youichi bumps into Sakurai at a train station causing Sakurai's paper work to get ruined, along with a limited issue design magazine. Youichi noticed he owned the same magazine and offers it to Sakurai. Sakurai accepts and visits Youichi's home to pick up the magazine and from there the story unfolds. Further into the story you learn more about their daily lives, the people around them both, the past and the slowly developing friendship that's leading into romance.

The first volume heavily focuses on development and fleshing out the characters, even the side characters to a point. Both Youichi and Sakurai were likeable. Youichi kind of reminded me of a friend with Asperger (Youichi doesn't pick up on emotional ques both his and others very well or at all) and I've known people like Sakurai, so I was totally sucked into the story. The storyline is ongoing, so the volume isn't conclusive (the manga is currently at volume 4 in Japan, so hopefully we get the remaining volumes after volume 2 that's coming later this year). There is no sex in the first volume, so nothing explicit, so I wouldn't suggest picking this up if you're looking for that. The art is well done, nothing out of the ordinary and probably a style most yaoi readers have seen before, but the author does a great job with illustrating the story, even the subtle emotions.

I highly recommend the manga for anyone looking for story and character development. 5/5 for me, I enjoyed reading the manga and can't wait for the next volume.

Well-Paced, Delightful story

It's a slow-paced story, but I really loved Does the Flower Blossom? because the characters are easy for me to connect with, and they feel real. Sakurai and You-chan are really similar in many ways, so it's interesting to read about the way that they interact together and with others. Both men seem to get on each other's nerves, yet there's something that attracts them to each other. I can't wait to see the story build in volume 2.

I enjoyed this first book of a series very much. The artwork is quite beautiful and the plot is getting to be quite interesting. I look forward to reading the next in the series when it's published.

Daddy's Home! Venom returns...

This new Spiderman series starts off with a bang. A new overpowered supervillain has been harvesting the corpses of dead superheroes to absorb their powers and essentially overtake all of humanity. Because of this Spiderman must keep his identity extra secret now that he has a wife and baby to protect. Being Peter Parker and staying under the radar becomes almost like a way to survive in this post-apocalyptic Marvel battleworld. Spiderman is still working at the Daily Bugle but he's not making enough money and struggling with the responsibilities of being a dad and being Spiderman.

I won't give away too many spoilers. I'll just say that the artwork and the writing in this series are very good. It's definitely up there with some of Marvel's best work in the last 10 or 20 years. If you like badass evil Eddie Brock Venom, you will love this series.

That's a good story. Of course this isn't the MC2 Universe ...

Mary Jane and Peter Parker married. That's a good story. Of course this isn't the MC2 Universe or the main Marvel universe, so the daughter's not May. This story takes a pretty dour turn in the first issue. Spidey's a member of the Avengers but it seems like it's really disconnected from them and all the heroes on this Earth have been wiped out accept for Spidey and the remaining Avengers and they're not on the same page. It's just odd. Still, love seeing Pete and MJ together and we'll see what lies ahead in future issues.

If you like Slott's run, you'll like this. Peter and MJ fans may not enjoy the turn of events at the issue's climax, but if you go into this as a "what if" it may not feel so much like a middle finger to you for thinking the decisions in One More Day were out of character. The artwork by Adam Kubert is pretty good.

Fortunately, he's an interesting fan, rejecting Barks' most popular works because he disdains Donald's zillionaire uncle Scrooge McDuck, partly because Scrooge's financial fixation limits him. Schilling loves Donald's flexibility: Everyone else is a slave to continuity, but Donald has new professions, hobbies and expertise in each story. Observations about the Barks Duck's

Interesting background stories from some of Carl Barks better known duck stories. I did not agree with everything Mr. Schiling brought out, however, he did point out several items that I had overlooked for years. I have been a Barks fan from the very first Barks story. Of course I had no idea who the "good" artist was( I thought it was Walt Disney). I was hooked at "Pirates Gold" which my Dad had to reread to me several times, (Barks stories actually taught me to read) right on til the grand master Carl Barks retired. So I know the Duck family pretty darned well. My only complaint with the book (he lost a star) was due to the use of off color expletives in his comments. If you are put-off by accessional off color comments be forewarned. If not, you'll like the book.

I great read for old and new fans alike

This was well worth the wait. Witty commentary and an in depth look at some of Donald's early comics, his growth as a character and a look at some of his surrounding/supporting characters and how they too have changed and grown with the times.

One of the Best Worst Things There is to Read

Great series overall. There are weird little flaws in some issues; typos, bad dialogue tracking between characters here and there, but minor. Bad proofreading.

It's a grim and graphic series. It's also written well and the variety of styles is great. The one constant being there is no hope. There is no safety. No heroes. Only the Crossed.

Crossed is the comic that sold me on comics. It is the only comic that I buy without fail, where as others I usually download, read, and then purchase if I enjoyed them enough, such as Watchmen or 303.
