About the Author
Jerry Figgiani, 8th dan, President/Founder of Shorin Ryu Karatedo International, comes from a strong lineage of Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu practitioners who have followed the footsteps of Shoshin Nagamine. He has been training in karate since 1977 and has been teaching for over 25 years. Through his extensive background and training in the martial arts, he has developed a unique way of bringing the kata to life. He is a sought-after seminar instructor who has the ability to enable students to understand not only the kata, but the function and application, thus making his seminars universal to any system. In addition, he is a published author and has won numerous awards in the martial arts industry for his accomplishments.

Bridging the Old to the New

Some have been fortunate enough to travel great distances to meet the giants of their chosen (martial) art styles, but for many, meeting and training with these great Masters is mostly beyond reach. Inside his new book, From the Minds of The Masters, Jerry Figgiani Sensei introduces the reader to some of the great Master of Okinawan Karate in a way that seems to open the doors of the dojo, making each of them accessible and within the reach of the reader.
This is a book that creates a bridge between the old and the new. There is a sense of connection that can be felt when reading the interviews that goes beyond the technical aspects of the movements, to the heart of Karatedo. That said, there is ample discussion of technique to satisfy practitioners of all levels, but more over, Figgiani Sensei is able to weave a deep connection between today's popular mixed martial arts and their obvious roots in traditional practice. In his discussion of kata application, he notes Lao Tzu's concept of "determined searching" connecting the practicality of repetitive, diligent kata practice to the unlocking of technical understanding. It is very refreshing to read about the commonalities that bring us all together in our practice rather than the stylistic differences that are all too often used keep us apart. Woven throughout the various interviews is the idea that there is much to be learned by studying those that came before, and preserving the knowledge, yet being open to looking at it with a fresh mind.
This book will bring the readers face to face with their own beliefs about their martial arts practice. It offers an opportunity to recognize the deep roots that today's popular mixed martial arts styles have with traditional study. It connects striking to grappling and offers a road map to the applications of kata, once thought to be secretly hidden techniques, to the student willing to see them. This book is an interesting, fast paced read that feels more like a tour through the world of Okinawan Karatedo than a book about it. The interviews are well paced, asks the questions that we all want to know and leaves the reader wanting more. This is a must have addition to any martial artist's library or that of anyone interested in seeing the threads that bond today's popular martial arts to their strong and deep roots in traditional training.

Rediscovering the Heart of Traditional Karate

This new book from Sensei Jerry Figgiani is a significant addition to the on-going discussions of how traditional karate contributes to the contemporary martial arts scene. Instead of proclaiming his own views about Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu, Sensei Figgiani allows many of the leaders in the tradition to speak for themselves and for the martial art they study, love, represent, and teach. I appreciate this polyvocal approach to the subject, and the reader has much to gain from this book, be he/she a beginner or an experienced karateka.

Moreover, the last section is particularly important to the progression of traditional martial arts, because it ironically brings us back to the early roots of karate, revealing that what we have come to recognize as "traditional karate" is not necessarily truly traditional. That is, Sensei Figgiani reviews significant historical information that allows us to think more deeply about the relationships between kata, kumite drills, and civilian combat or practical self-defense. In this contemporary, market-driven martial arts context, people are (rightly and understandably) fascinated with mixed martial arts. Sensei Figgiani explores various ways that Matsubayashi and other traditional karate systems were at their core and from their inception based upon many different styles, thus being one of the first "mixed martial arts" systems. The intellectually honest reader will gain much from this discussion, and it will open his/her mind to fresh re-interpretations of kihon, kata, and kumite drills that rediscover the ways in which these aspects of training are actually interconnected. Kihon is self-defense, kumite drills involve more than strikes and kicks, and the kata actually do teach us how to fight using grappling, throws, and joint locks, in addition to strikes and kicks. We will embrace these realities only if we have eyes to see and ears to hear.

In short, this book is an important contribution to the new efforts of traditional martial artists to understand what traditional karate is truly about. I highly recommend this book.

Great book! A must read for all Karateka!

As a student of Sensei Jerry’s, reading this book has opened my mind to many different viewpoints held by many other prominent karate practitioners. As I read the articles and interviews, it brought back some very fond memories of my early childhood when I had the opportunities to train with a few of these masters. As I analyzed the book, I saw how Sensei Figgiani tied the newer ways and ideas to the more traditional ways of thought. Doing this helps to bring back many ideas that have been forgotten back into the modern day. Throughout this book there are helpful and insightful thoughts, commentary and ways of thinking. Reading this book truly expanded my horizons and the way I think about karate and its heritage.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to gain knowledge or a different perspective into the world of traditional karate-do and the martial arts. Aside from the incredible amount of history and thoughts, it overall is a great book. I couldn’t put it down once I started reading.

About the Author
Wallace Allan Wood (1927–1981) rebooted Marvel's Daredevil, designing the iconic costume that recently appeared on the smash hit Netflix series. He was one of the best and funniest cartoonists of the earliest iteration of Mad magazine and, thanks to his work on the EC Comics line, he is also widely considered one of America’s greatest science-fiction cartoonists. With his magazine anthology witzend, he helped pioneer underground/independent comics publishing.

Albert B. Feldstein (1925-2014) was an American writer, editor, and artist, best known for his work at EC Comics (particularly in the science fiction genre) and, from 1956 to 1985, as the editor of the satirical magazine Mad.

A Wondrous Voyage Back to Sc-Fi's Golden Age

I was lucky enough to purchase the Russ Cochran cased reprints of EC Comics' entire sci-fi run (Wierd Science, Weird Fantasy, and later, Weird Science-Fantasy)from the fabulous "golden age" of the 1950s.This was back when they were first offered and were pricey, but not prohibitively so. Recently, you'd have to pay several hundred dollars per set. The full boxed sets are rather inconvenient for fireside or bedtime reading. This (and the other sci-fi compilation of this series, Judgement Day, by Joe Orlando) is a welcome alternative. I keep this handier compilation of Wally Wood's work (imho he and Joe Orlando were the premier illustrators for EC's space-themed works) on my night table for casual reading. It was EC, and more specifically Wood's meticulously depicted space-ships, robots and visions of space exploration, that awakened the sci-fi bug in this 75-year old. I was 12 years old and looking for something a bit more exciting than the usual "boys' adventure" type juvenalia available to pre-adolescents in 1952. Then I caught a glimpse of a Weird Science peeking out from among the "Field and Stream"s and various "man's saga" and True Detective pulps on my local newsstand. The cover was a typical Wood rocket interior, with amazingly intricate dials, panels, piping and gizmos surrounding a spaceship portlight through which a menacing alien was peering. I was hooked. Of course there was some prurient interest, in that WW had a penchant for depicting pulchritudinous female astronauts in revealing skin-tight space suits. It wasn't merely the artistry--thought this was a big part of it. The stories were quite thought-provoking and led me to explore further the writings of Ray Bradbury (a frequent author of the tales), Sturgeon, Clarke, Heinlein, Welles, Verne, and a host of other classic sci-fi authors. Re-reading these caringly illustrated tales some 60+ years later, I am struck by how the promise of space exploration--boldly predicted in the famous Colliers magazine articles of 1952-53, by Wernher von Braun and Chesley Bonestell--kind of fizzled after the Apollo moon landing of July 1969. Sure, we've had robotic probes, landers and rovers but the tales encapsuled in Spawn of Mars thought we'd have men on Mars well before 2015. By this late date, our astronauts would be embarking on multi-generational starship journeys to Earth clones circling Alpha Centauri and kindred solar systems. Ah, well, thanks to this wonderful bit of nostalgia for yesterday's tomorrows, I can rekindle the hope. Even if there's not much chance of seeing it happen in my lifetime, I can nostalgically recollect how it might have been--and still might be generations hence.

This entire series of EC reprints is excellent and this is my favorite of all the titles. Spawn of Mars features Wally Wood art in every story. Page after page of Wood art in crisp black and white on quality matte finish paper. The hardcover binding is solid and sure to last. For those wanting an all Wally Wood artwork collection this is a great compilation. Highly recommended.

Second helpings but where is the Reed Crandall book?

These EC Fantagraphics are just Fantastic!!!!!! To me they are only bested by the "Complete EC Library" sets from Russ Cochran which are also in magnificent black&white. (In my younger days I grew up with comics published in b&w and that is still the way I like to see this early comic-art).

I can't speak for "Spawn of Mars and other stories" yet because I haven't received it yet, but if it will be anything like "Came the Dawn and other stories" it will be just awesome.

There is another reason for writing this review. "Spawn of Mars and other stories" is a second helping of Wallace Wood art and a second helping on Graham Ingels is on it's way. Every major EC-artist has been tackled by now EXCEPT for one..... REED CRANDALL is still missing and I have mailed Fantagraphics asking when they will put out his book. But they won't answer me. Perhaps there are people out there who might want to bug them about this!

Well I am looking forward to receiving this second book with Wally-Art. I highly recommend all the other EC-books by Fantagrapics.

Gr 8 Up—Korean graphic novelist Kang adapts Machiavelli's classic treatise about politics and power. Kang also explains the history behind the work but mainly uses this volume to provide historical examples of Machiavelli's main points. Each chapter opens with text from the source material and is followed by political figures that demonstrate Machiavelli's points. For example, in "Concerning Mixed Principalities," Kang presents illustrations of Louis XII of France and the Duchy of Milan. The colorful artwork, while reminiscent of manga style, is more realistic than some graphic novels. Kang's images do not distract from but enhance the main message. VERDICT Teens interested in this period in history will find this book most beneficial. Mchiavelli as webcomic.

An interesting take on one of the seminal works of rational thought. Taking the Machiavelli work as canon, and presenting it juxtaposed with cheeky web comic style animation illustrating the life and times gives an accessible entry into the thesis of Power. Dialog including the Pope complaining "dang that punk" about della Rovere, and Savonarola final thoughts being "stories about me to be continued" transform Renaissance political thought into amusing quips, and bring it down to the level of today's consumer.

Graphics are about average for web comics, simply executed features, flat coloring and very little depth to the scene, gives an overall childish tone to the graphic parts.

As Machiavellian gospel? True to concept. As graphic novel? A little rushed, but genuine. One worth buying.

It won't take you ages to read the middle!

This is rather an oddball comic book. It takes the text of The Prince, written by Niccolò Machiavelli, a "textbook" designed for no other purpose, really, than to ingratiate himself with the powers that be after a fall from grace. The book purportedly advises royalty how to get power and hold onto it regardless of what it costs the people under rule. This work is really at the root of world politics, but it has nothing to offer modern politicians and dictators who have far surpassed Machiavelli in Machiavellianism, which has degenerated from being a byword of power plays in the past, to being a dirty word today.

There was a problem with the iPad version on Bluefire Reader, which I have been experiencing in several comics, not just this one. In other comics, speech was missing from speech balloons. In this one, the text in the space (see image on my blog) where the original text from Machiavelli's work is printed at the start of each chapter, is missing. Where this text was supposed to appear on the bottom half of the opening page to each chapter, it was missing. if it continued to a second page, then there was text on the second page, but it continued from the missing text on the first page, which of course was invisible! Something is screwy here!

The original work from Machiavelli is interspersed with comic book style art work illustrating his antiquated and brain-dead precepts, which is to say that, in the big picture, Machiavelli was clueless. He was a product of his life and times, of course, which is a good excuse to have! Hereditary rule is, let's face it, nothing more than a dictatorship, and has no place in a modern enlightened world - or any world for that matter. Indeed, it's nothing more than the fruit of unearned privilege rooted in might makes right, and fertilized with the lives of the monarch's subjects. The problem is that all too often in our world even today, we still have "royal" hereditary, as the Kennedy and Bush families have demonstrated, or we have capital heredity where money stands in for royal privilege and provides a monetary line of descent.

It does offer insight into how people thought of their world back in Machiavelli's day, so it is of historical interest, but other than that, The Prince has nothing of value to offer us, and it certainly doesn't make for a rollicking read. However, if you have to read it, you could do worse than this volume. It's crisply done and well laid out. It offers clean, simple images, which are, at least for me, drawn amusingly, so that lightens the road of Machiavelli's dense and pedantic text. Despite the fact that for me it did nothing, I am recommending this as an alternative to even drier versions!

Faithful Adaptation, Not a Great Graphic Novel

Overall, I think Morim Kang's adaptation of Nicolo Machiavelli's The Prince is a faithful one. Not only does the book do a good job of explaining some of the cultural and political issues surrounding Nicolo's writing of the text in the first place, but the book attempts to bring The Prince to a new readership. I first read The Prince as an undergraduate student when I became interested in the psychological phenomenon called Machiavellianism. Although Christi and Geiss' psychological concept is widely discussed in academia today, I do believe reading The Prince is a wildly different experience than one expects.

As for this graphic novel adaptation, the basic structure of the book is great. My only real complaint is the use of typed letter as compared to more traditional hand letter techniques generally associated with this genre. Although the pictures aren't the greatest masterpieces of this genre, I could live with the more simplified art, but the lettering pulls you out of the genre at times. Furthermore, there are points in the book where there are pages of pure text, which also takes you out of this genre.

Overall, I think this is a good adaptation. Do I think this is a great graphic novel, not especially. Would I still recommend the book to people who want to read The Prince, yes I would.

Emma’s parents had died during the war. Having escaped its deprivations by touring Europe, she has recently returned to live with an aunt. Careless and giddy, she is so overwhelmed by the excitement of the prospect that she accepts. Once James is settled, he will send for her to join him.

In San Francisco, James reconnects with his brothers and buys the Condor Ranch. Meanwhile, Emma packs all her personal belongings and heads west, accompanied by her traveling companion, Molly Buchanan.

While Emma dithers and complains about every small annoyance, Molly, an orphan forced to make her own way, embraces each new adventure with a can-do spirit. The contrast between these two young ladies couldn’t be greater, as James and his brother, Matthew, discover.

James’ sense of unease, almost of entrapment, increases the more time he spends with his betrothed. From their friends’ home through travel to the ranch to scrutiny of the hacienda itself, Emma is a non-stop complainer of magnitude. James is beginning to worry that he’s made a big mistake. Especially since he is more drawn to Molly and her quiet competence than he is to the girl he invited to journey across country.

James is nothing if not an honorable man. Still haunted by the specter of his troops fighting and dying far away from his command, he knows that sole responsibility for Emma rests on his shoulders. Yet he wants only to be with Molly.

To complicate matters further, Rosa Alfaro, the ranch housemaid and resident troublemaker, has decided she wants James. And nothing is going to stand in her way.

mystery and romance just enough of both

I felt that you could read this as a stand alone book. But by the end of the book you knew enough about the next brother that you wanted to see what happened to him.

Romance & Mystery!!

Taking the High Road, another great book by Morris Fenris. In my opinion, this book is mixed with some romance, and also some mystery too. It's wonderful mix that I like so much. The story are just awesome to read from the beginning until the end. I would definitely recommend this book for all of you, especially if you like romance and mystery. This is a perfect combination for you to read.

somewhat mislwading

While the story had good potential, I found that it should not be listed as a Christian novel due to some language and sexual content. I would have given it four stars if it had truly fit into the Christian genre.

:::::::::: I loved this book and LOVED Nick -- he was a roguish "tall, dark, and dangerous" (perfect for Molly's purpose in pretending), but his gentle handling of his mother (whose health is his reason for wanting to remain pretend-engaged after she finally starts to show signs of recovery and enthusiasm for something, namely the engagement, since falling ill) revealed a softer, kinder side. Their story was a familiar "pretend to be engaged" plot device, but I greatly enjoyed the book anyway. The author wrote it well, and the characters are lively. Additionally, there are secondary characters and a side plot that really add to the fullness of the story without distracting from Nick and Molly's romance. This fun book made me feel fabulous after reading it, and I'd HIGHLY recommend it. ::::::::::::::::::

Earlier Unshelved books were better.

I have read all the Unshelved books but this one had almost no story lines. It was an entire book of patrons being idiots and librarians getting the witty edge. So basically an entire book of people being mean and insulting each other. I prefer the earlier books when things actually happened.

divorcing heroine, pining Hero

28yo heroine goes to her husband's office to meet the woman he's leaving her for & encounters her husband's boss Hero who she's been avoiding since she saw him during a company party a year before. Hero was the best friend of her late brother & who was involved in the car crash with him the day after he & heroine made love. She hasn't seen him since & didn't tell him she got pregnant with their son. Hero is determined to help her move on with her marriage & informs her of his intention to take care of her & her 3 kids. She has had it with men & their broken promises to her & makes conditions to test his sincerity.

This was an ok Darcy book. I liked Hero's pining for heroine all those years they were apart, even knowing that she married someone else. Seeing her 11 years later with her husband didn't stop him from longing for her. He was honorable in his non-interference with her marriage. But, as soon as he found out that she & her hubby were divorcing, I liked how he clearly made known his attraction & intentions towards her. He was lovingly inclusive of all her kids & showed how he wanted to take care of all of them. I
didn't like & don't really believe heroine's sudden change of love from her husband & Hero within 2 days. She loved her husband, married him, & had kids with him. She felt very betrayed by his infidelity & was willing to fight for him, thus, her visit to see the Other Woman. So, it was disconcerting to see her quickly shift her affection from her husband to Hero in no time. It made her seem so emotionally malleable & man-dependent. I would've liked to see her strike it on her own & get a job or something instead of just transferring houses & men. But Hero was pretty determined & attractive so maybe she was fighting a losing battle. Another thing I didn't care for was how EVIL her ex-husband's new girlfriend was. She had 2 abortions, didn't like children, money-hungry, manipulative,& a thief. Was it really necessary to make the other woman look THAT bad? Why not magnify the primary person at fault to begin with--heroine's husband? He's the one, after all, who chose to cheat on heroine & leave her & their kids for somebody else. My only other complaint is the book cover. The baby in the cover looks like a possessed baby doll & made bridal heroine looks nutty, carrying a baby doll at her wedding.

Somewhat recommended.

CAUTION POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!

So this is one where the h, Rowena, attempts to fight for her cheating hubby. Yeah, if he had been the H you know he would have been asking her why she didn't fight for him. Well....he's NOT the H so he didn't want Rowena to fight for him. This guy aside from cheating was supposedly a good father, but as you read further in the book and see his actions your left thinking that it's mighty convenient the way this "good father" bows out of the picture AND you get to see what a nasty POW he is. Granted the OW isn't much better, but seriously would have been nice to see him realize what he lost...completely.

I liked that Keir truly loved Rowena and he even loved her from afar when he realized that her hubby worked for him. He attempted to help her put her marriage back together but as he said, "You want a husband that needs to be rescued from another woman?" Um...NO WAY!! Rowena and Keir were separated my some manipulations from the past and conveniently they are not there to see the consequences of their actions. Keir is willing to fight, sacrifice and forgive to be w/ Rowena and even though she places a few tests in his path he passes w/ flying colors.

Some drawback of the story are: the "conveniences" that are littered throughout, the time line of finishing off things, the sicky sweet fairy tale like quality, and the most glaring one - her quickly getting over her loser hubby! But hey other than that and my wanting to see hubby suffer for his choices and freaking taking that dang lamp, it wasn't a bad read just a little slow. Felt like there were some good angst qualities there but they weren't fully realized for me.

this is one of the best book ever. the hero loved the heroine and her children. story like this gives you hope. the heroine was strong and lovable. she was a good mother.
