Strange accidents always seem to happen around Hako Natsuno—so much so that she’s been dubbed “The Queen of Bad Luck.” It’s hardly surprising then that a naked alien prince falls from the sky to tell her that out of all the girls in the universe, he’s come to Earth to mate with her. Does this mean Hako’s luck has changed, or…?

Gr 9 Up—Seemingly cursed, Hako is known as the "Queen of Bad Luck" by her classmates. When Io, a gorgeous naked boy, falls out of the sky and claims to be her intergalactic soulmate sent to mate with her, is it a reversal of her typical misfortunes or more of the same? This shojo manga aims for a rom-com combo of genuine romantic tension and comic antics involving misunderstandings about humanity's distinctions between love and sex. This should provide for essential comedic encounters as the protagonists fumble to communicate and gradually discover how they feel, but the events don't click or inspire much in the way of heart fluttering. The author also hopes to navigate the weirdness of Io regularly pressuring Hako to have sex with him without any real-world overtones of how close that would be to harassment. This is mostly avoided, although a scene where Io threatens Hako's ex is particularly misjudged, and leaves readers unsure just how light and frothy this romance actually is. While the visuals hit all the shojo marks, many sequences are abbreviated and unclear, which helps make the characters seem thin and distant. VERDICT A middling and unlikely to charm graphic novel, with regrettable sexual politics.—Benjamin Russell, Belmont High School, NH

Silly romantic comedy with an alien prince and a schoolgirl
By Johanna Draper Carlson
It’s silly comedy, but nothing wrong with that. Hako is the Queen of Bad Luck, known for having things fall on her. Today, a naked guy falls out of the sky and says he’s an interstellar prince and she should be his queen. They’re made to mate with each other, soul mates according to his culture. She refuses, saying humans need to be in love first, so Io hangs around to learn what that means. I get the feel of a modern-day Lum: Urusei Yatsura, with a wacky alien who loses his clothes and engages in romantic hijinks.
Although a typically cheerful shojo heroine, Hako has a quiet sorrow, since when she was younger, she was called cursed and teased by other kids. She’s afraid of those she gets close too winding up hurt. Having a guy interested in her despite her “curse” fulfills dreams she didn’t even realize she had. He has enhanced healing, can grow wings after kissing birds, shape-shifts, and has other superpowers capable of protecting them both. It’s hard to disagree with his planet’s idea that the two are meant for each other.
He does exaggerated things just to see her smile and addresses her fears without her having to speak about them. It’s a charming, childlike view of love that is nevertheless comforting. Although the series tackles the expected stereotypical events — a beach trip, watching fireworks in a yukata — Io’s naive ignorance gives them all a fresh feel. So cute!
By Jude
~4/5
I knew I was going to love it, just by the cover and a brief glimpse of the description. And I was right.
This. Was. Adorable.
Io literally crash lands on Earth from another planet, goes directly to Hako, and claims that she’s his soulmate, and they must mate. Hako, who has all her life had perpetually bad luck, doesn’t know how to take this.
Io is adorable; very happy go lucky, eager to make Hako fall in love with him, when he realizes that’s how things work on Earth. Hako is trying very hard not to fall for it, because everyone who gets close to her gets hurt, because of her bad luck.
This volume is very happy go lucky, very fluffy, but there’s also a few hints of something darker in Io, which gets shown later in the volume, and there's actual depth to Hako's feelings. Quite a bit was revealed in this volume, which I was surprised by. But none of it was rushed; it flowed perfectly, and the characters are all very easy to like. The way that the two fall for each other, all the cute moments between them, are very well done, and add up to a nice flow for their feelings.
The art is also very pretty, and now I’m hoping to find more of her English-released series.
I am really excited for the second, and final, volume. I know I’ll just eat it up.
I did want to mention a comparison/recommendation. Beast Master. (Maybe also Flower in a Storm?) It has a similar new-to-the-world element, and is just as cute as this one.

Cute Shojo Manga Series
By Usagi Uchiha
I've read many of a cute story in manga in my years and nothing but cute can describe this series. Hako, the girl in the story, has very bad luck. I'm serious, like get dumped on by a bucket of water everyday. One day, while being dragged into a occult club at her high school, a weird summoning goes wrong. Suddenly, a young boy appears out of the smoke, claiming to be an alien and wants Hako to be his mate. Of course, Hako says no and that he should stay away from him since she's a ball of bad luck.
Not listening to Hako, this prince alien boy, Io, keeps trying to win Hako over, failing everything. Eventually Hako sees the good in Io but before she can confess anything, a servant from the alien planet where Io is from, says that Io wasn't even supposed to be on Earth! The first book ends with Io refusing to go back and instead decides to stay with Hako, despite defying orders to find his true mate.
I can't wait to read the next volume as this one had a great plot and cute artwork. I recommend Meteor Prince to those who love shojo manga or cute stories.
