A book in which it's techniques changed my life

I am a former client of Dr. Floras which was fortunate enough to have found a Dr. that was able to diagnose my life long struggle with DID. Not only was he educated about DID, he spent the time necessary to complete the process of integration. The therapy progressed and became more complicated for me. As the result of the increased number of alters coming into the outside of my awareness, this had made my life impossibly complicated. As the result of the technique which Dr. Flora developed my therapy became more manageable. He was able to push back threatening alters away from my awareness. Then when I returned to my session for therapy, he would bring that Alter forward and join, (him or her) into the core without reliving the past life trauma. Once the alter was joined into the core, the life experience was dealt with in a session without the hurt, pain, and suffering.
This process turned the suffering, confusion, and unknowing into self-knowledge. Previous to my therapy with DR. Flora I had spent 6 years in therapy trying to find out why I had missing time, people telling me I had done things to which I had no memory of. Yet no one else had ever been able to diagnose the DID. I recall telling my social worker that I would rise up out of my body and watch someone else continue on, but could do nothing to stop it. The very professionals I went to for help, could not recognize the cluster of symptoms as DID. Not only that, they did not believe in the disorder! Without help, my internal system would have continued to create alters to handle the stress and triggers in my life. I went into therapy with Dr. Flora at the age of 41; I am now 62 and have been totally integrated for 17 years. I am proof that his techniques work.
The techniques developed by Dr. Flora described in his book "AND THEN THEY WERE ONE" would help so many professionals to know how to diagnose and treat DID without the need for abreaction.

This is a book that I am very fond and ...

This is a book that I am very fond and familiar with, it is the other side of being a child who's seen what can happen to a person who's been abused and I call her Mom! My Mother Glinda Mckee has been working with Dr. Flora on this book and now it has come to light! There aren't too many people out there that I will divulge this information to, that my Mom had D.I.D and back then it was M.P.D..... But now I think it is time to take off the mask and reveal my secret. Not thinking of what people will say because they do not believe that this is real, but to open eyes of the non-believers and also to help the other souls that have this disorder. I am living proof that this is real and I lived through this for all the years of my childhood. After my Mom and Dr. Flora have worked so hard on this book to bring to the forefront of a disorder that not too many people speak of and to give proof that I lived through this and my Mom was given back to us after Dr. Flora's treatment. If it were not for Dr. Flora I don't know what would have happened to our family or Mom... Thank you Doc for giving us our Mom back and saving her life!!!!!

As a med/surg nurse looking to shift my career to psych I found this book very helpful. It was an easy read with enough technical jargon for the advanced practitioner but also simple enough for the novice. I enjoyed the history of DID, but found the amount of people who have this diagnosis staggering. The case studies were helpful. The author included cases that were not resolved as well as ones that were lost to follow up so as not to lead the reader into thinking the treatment of these people is all a bed of roses. There is much work to be done and I feel this approach will benefit a lot of people. Well done Dr. Flora.
