Grade 10 Up–This book continues the story of the mild-mannered speechwriter who, after having his mind transferred to a superpowered, nearly indestructible body, finds his life changed forever. One of the central themes of this series is Concretes efforts to maintain some semblance of a normal life. Here, he hears the call of Hollywood. Faced with extreme budgetary issues, the producers of a fantasy/action film hire him–not as an actor, but to cut their special-effects budget by putting his abilities to use. Concrete spends his days tossing boulders, tearing down sets, and even powering the shell of a car careening through a city street. Much of the action works as wry satirical commentary on the art and fakery of filmdom. Chadwicks visual style is at the same high level as in previous volumes; black-and-white drawings lend an odd sense of realism to the impossible happenings. Originally published in four separate issues, Creature is the longest Concrete story to date. Chadwick makes full use of the extra space, working in layers of satire and mixing in a few subplots with side characters. But the heart of the story–and its main appeal–lies firmly within the well-developed, and ever-evolving, character of Concrete. The being known to the world as Concrete is a gentle, reflective soul whose intelligence was transplanted into a seven-foot, granitelike body with astonishing strength and heightened senses. It's hardly surprising, then, when Hollywood comes calling in the form of the producers of low-budget fantasy flick Rulers of the Omniverse. They want Concrete not to star in their epic, however, but to use his powers to perform the movie's special effects. Far from the usual superhero challenges, those that Concrete and the rest of the crew face include an interfering new studio head, the director getting fired, and an on-set accident--for which Concrete is blamed--that threatens to shut down production entirely. Chadwick has dabbled in the movie industry, and his firsthand experience imparts behind-the-scenes verisimilitude. This 1991 story was the longest Concrete tale to date, allowing Chadwick additional room to emphasize characterization--his forte--as accentuated by his delicate, finely wrought drawings. This trade collects Concrete: Fragile Creature issues #1-4 and numerous shorter stories from various anthology comics.
The first two volumes add depth and context to what's here but aren't really prerequisites.
Former Senatorial speech writer Ron Lithgow is known to the world as Concrete, the result of a government cyborg project. The story is a compromise with the government to allow him some freedom without alarming the public with the true alien origins of his 7+ ft. and 1,000+ lb. body of stone. With unique abilities and requirements that are both blessing and curse, Ron travels with the only friends who know his secret trying to find meaning in it all, handle his newfound fame, and do some good along the way.
I found Fragile Creature to be tighter and better paced than the previous trades. The first half is the titular four issues mini-series, which sees Concrete sign on to help produce special effects for a movie. Largely inspired by the author's own experiences in Hollywood, this is a layered story that contains the usual deep, introspective analysis of the human condition that permitted the first two collections. It's done with an extremely deft touch here, with interesting backdrops of the difficulties and complications of filmmaking and developments on Concrete's homefront that could have big consequences down the road.
The remainder of this volume is comprised of short stories, varying in style and approach. Again as usual the tone can get pretty dark, but always for a thematic reason and with something to say. A couple of recurring supporting cast members seem to be gradually developing in these stories and there are a few that expand on incidents mentioned in passing in the longer stories, which I appreciate and find quite interesting.
With such a philosophical and diverse comic the particular subjects and material for each story holds significant influence over its connection with the reader. Fragile Creature pretty much hit all the right notes for me and is my favorite volume thus far.

Recommended highly -- even as a first experience!

"Fire at Twilight" (one of the short stories herein) was the first Concrete story I ever read. I'd heard about the series, but hadn't sampled it until the story just fell into my lap. (I was reading the anthology Dark Horse Presents for other reasons.)
Then I picked up the first issue of "Fragile Creature" and was amazed. Converted, almost. I'd collected a few other series retroactively, and was secretly glad that there was such a limited back story. (Now of course I'm saddened -- I've read and reread everything multiple times.)
This story is told with such grace that it pulls the reader in. Haven't read volumes one and two? That's okay -- you'll acclimate quickly. Have read them? Then the experience will be all the deeper. The art is exquisite, the story and script are magnificent. Emotionally this will always be the core of the series for me. HIGHLY recommended!

As strong as the first volume

One of the best graphic series I've ever read, if not the best -- beautifully and imaginatively drawn, with deep, moving stories that contain most every characteristic people look for in storytelling (intellect, humor, pathos, adventure, sorrow, joy, awe, sex, movie parodies, and a three-legged dog). What would your life become if you were suddenly transformed into a 1,200-pound hunk of ugly rock? Paul Chadwick answers that question from most every conceivable direction, often with unexpected, hilarious, exciting, and very touching results. The series hasn't lagged at all in quality so far--this third volume is just as good as the first, sometimes even better.
