The best of the best of the early daze of comic heroism and amazing artwork -- yippee!!!

When comic book fans talk about how Joe Simon and Jack Kirby revolutionized comics, they're usually referring to the first 10 blockbuster issues of Captain America for Marvel (then called Timely) Comics. Well, a year before that, the S&K team wove their magic into a science fiction series entitled Blue Bolt comics. It is evident from the first page of this beautifully drawn book that something very special was happening at a small publishing house called Novelty Press. With Golden Age Reprints delving into every nook and cranny of the early comics field, it is very easy to see how far ahead of the competition Simon and Kirby (Blue Bolt, back-up features in The Black Cat, etc.) were. Only a handful of other writer/artists -- Lou Fine (The Flame, Black Condor, The Ray), Will Eisner (Uncle Sam, Blackhawk), Jack Cole (Plastic Man). Jerry Robinson/Mort Meskin (The Black Terror, The Fighting Yank), Bill Everett (Amazing Man), Irv Novick (The Shield, Steel Sterling) and Bob "Fuje" (The Hangman) -- were equally adept at setting the pace. We take for granted today certain aspects of comic-book excellence, but it was all too rare during the World War II years. The Blue Bolt combined the best of Flash Gordon-style space heroics and empowered superfolks for sometimes as little as 10 pages of comic-book excellence, but what eye-popping gems they were (and are). You'll be forever grateful to the powers-that-be at Golden Age Reprints (a.k.a. UP History & Hobby) and Amazon for these rare and wonderful examples of ahead-of-their-time collector's items. They'll leave you shouting for "more, more, more!" Don't be ashamed, I'll be right there with you!
