Dr. Linda Girgis MD, FAAFP is a family physician in South River, New Jersey. She has been in private practice since 2001. She holds board certification from the American Board of Family Medicine and is affiliated with St. Peter's University Hospital and Raritan Bay Hospital. She teaches medical students and residents from Drexel University and other institutions. Dr. Girgis earned her medical degree from St. George's University School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency at Sacred Heart Hospital, through Temple University and she was recognized as intern of the year. She is an Advisory Board member for Sermo, the #1 online physicians’ only community. She is a blogger for Physician's Weekly and the Library of Medicine, where she is one of their featured physicians. Additionally, she is a guest columnist for Medcity News and HIT Outcomes and has had articles published in several other media outlets. She has been interviewed in US News and on NBC Nightly News. I read this book in 2 days and got the kindle version and really liked it and it was easy reading and addressed current problems doctors are facing in todays world. thank you Linda for writing a good book with excellent insight.

According to a Gallup poll, the uninsured rate fell to 13.4% in the second quarter of 2014 - after implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Many are illegal immigrants - a group the government has been unable to address in any sort of consistent manner. (We simply can't afford to take care of everyone who wants in, but conservatives want cheap labor and liberals want more votes.) About 205 are children - many in households where the parents work but cannot afford to purchase insurance and do not qualify for public programs.
Many insured people have large deductibles, and many treatments for rare diseases are considered experimental and not covered. It is estimated that 1.5 million will file bankruptcy in 2014 because of medical bills. Patients unable to pay typically end up in the ER, so nobody should think that denying care saves money - it simply shifts costs from a hopefully controlled and rational government program to uncontrolled added costs for hospitals.
Author Girgis has an understandable dislike of HMO limitations, and contends they had considerable costs to total healthcare expenditures. However, she also fails to also admit that most HMO/insurance coverage is provided through competitive bidding, nor does she address the problem that U.S. charges for care, be they by doctors or hospitals, are about double those in other nations.
Then there also is the serious problem of medical errors purportedly being the third-leading cause of death. She asserts that nearly 25% of healthcare dollars goes into defensive medicine - far more than that reported by objective government sources.
