This book was a real page-turner for me, because I was so surprised at the turn-about of the usual characters' persona, when there is your typical sweet heroine and the Type-A Alpha hero. The author turned the tables on us in this interesting story, and made the female the Alpha! Well worth reading, just for this interesting concept.
I don't like to give storylines away, especially the surprises which make a book entertaining and interesting. The gist of the story is this: Heroine: Harriet, a career woman who has absolutely zero interest in men, never wants to marry and is known at work as a shrew and has mean-spirited co-workers who would love to see her gone. Hero: Roan, a struggling artist who clashes with Harriet several times, before she makes him an offer he can't refuse: marriage! Not a real one, mind you. She just has to satisfy her grandfather's stipulation before she can inherit her childhood home.
What happens is the unexpected, at least for me. Harriet is not an easy person to love, and is quite the witch throughout the entire book. Roan seems like a real sexy sweetheart, and I wanted to just step into the storyline and tell Harriet what a fool she was for freezing him out continuously, lol! But this is what makes a person keep reading, to see how the storyline plays out.
I wanted to give this book 4 stars, but I didn't because I don't like the way Harriet was initiated into their marriage. Yes, she is a stubborn cuss. But. Ultimately, she was given free choice, but it just didn't sit well with me, because they were almost total strangers and she kept saying, "No." The hero is always gentle with her, and as I said she was ultimately given free choice. But what about up to that point, doesn't that count, too?
The only other problem I have with the book is that the final bit when they realize their true feelings should have been longer. This part of the romance should never be shortened, in my humble opinion. I'll never understand why it usually is.
Overall, a very interesting book that I greatly enjoyed, and highly recommend except for my only 2 problems with it. The writing is excellent, and the author definitely knows how to hold our interest. In fact, I'm off to purchase more of Sara Craven's books right now.

A little too subtle for me - perhaps I'm stupid!

Plot synopsis: Harriet needs to be married before x birthday or she loses her birthright. She propositions Roan because she thinks she can help him out. But in the end, he has gone along for his own reasons. He doesn't need her help or money. Of course, they discover that they really love each other and live happily ever after.
As most of the other reviews here, I had a few basic problems with this book. The first is, although from the beginning, I was certain that Roan had feelings for Harriet, I never quite understood WHY. I mean she was either very cool or a total beyotch to him! A hint into his perspective would have helped a lot both in plausibily and in fleshing out Harriet's character.
Harriet is desparate to keep her familiy home, but you're not clued into WHY until very late in the story. It makes her come across as cold and challenging.
And the wedding night is completely misplaced. I know there has to be a certain amount of sex in these presents books, but I don't think this was the place for it.
Overall, though, I did like the story, and the growth of the characters. I would read something by this author again.

I actually like Sara Craven's writing but she has this serious flaw. Her heroines are seldom strong enough characters; they can't carry a plot on their shoulders, yet, time after time, Ms. Craven makes her heroines do this.
I think if only Ms. Craven had given the reader more of the hero, Roan's, point of view, it would have been an excellent story, a keeper, rather than barely OK (said with a sigh). The reader learns all about Harriet, the heroine - she's the granddaughter of a controlling old man, who begrudgingly lets her try to prove herself in the family business, but just when she begins to make a bit of a success of it, the old grandfather becomes all Neanderthal and insists that Harriet must be married by her 25th birthday.
Harriet is the typical Craven/Harlequin heroine; she's slim and has lovely hair & eyes but is convinced she's not attractive; she hasn't acknowledged her femininity and she dresses drably. She wants to be smart and independent, but goes about it in all the wrong ways: lacking self-confidence, she compounds this by working for her grandfather's company instead of going to school or trying for a job somewhere else. She gets completely rattled by the presence of a handsome man; doesn't even realize her pre-nup doesn't cover consummation of the marriage; doesn't allow her lawyer to investigate the PERFECT STRANGER she decides to marry... this reader began to feel tempted to throw the book at the wall.
It could only have been a much stronger, even-handed story, if the author had allowed us to know Roan a bit more, let us know sooner what his feelings for Harriet were, rather than just giving little tantalizing glimpses of tenderness and thoughtfulness toward her.
Harriet's need to 'find herself' and gain self-confidence is not a bad plot point, and Roan is an interesting, if too thinly drawn hero. With a little more of Roan and a little less of strictly Harriet's POV, this could have been a keeper.
