Four stories of varying quality (3.5 stars)

This volume collects issues 6 through 12 of the Dynamite "Battlestar Galactica" comic, as well as the 2014 annual. It features four stories of varying quality. The comic is based on the original television series, not on the reboot.
In the first story, the Cylons chase the fleet into a quantum storm and everyone starts dreaming of Earth. Pa Cartwright, I mean Adama, is certain that they have found the 13th colony while Apollo and Face, I mean Starbuck, are certain that Adama has gone nuts. The story takes up 4 issues. It's average, mostly predictable but with a couple of interesting twists.
In the second story, "The Adama Gambit," Adama questions his leadership ability and considers his successor. The battle scenes are better here and character development is the strongest among the four stories.
The third story, "Days Without End," is about Apollo's son Boxey. He wants to grow up tough so he can be a warrior. With a name like Boxey, he will clearly need to learn to fight. The point of the story is that it's difficult to find a safe place to play on a battlestar. Actually, the story is kind of sweet, albeit uneventful. It makes good filler.
The last story is about a dude named Baltar who has been left in exile on an empty planet, for which he carries a grudge against Adama. Baltar reflects upon his life until we reach the "surprise" ending. Baltar is a bit of a whiner and his story is entirely predictable, as is the unsurprising surprise ending.
The artwork in this series isn't bad, except that facial expressions seem random, rarely matching the dialog. None of the stories are bad but none are great. I would give 4 stars to "The Adama Gambit," 3 1/2 to the first and third stories, and 3 to the last one. That averages out to a 3 1/2 star rating for the volume as a whole.

CLASSIC BSG FUN!!!!!

Before I review this graphic novel, I have to make a confession – I love Battlestar Galactica. Whether it is the original show from my childhood in the 1970s, the different comic versions (Yes, even the Image ones), the Richard Hatch novels, or the 2004 reboot, I just love them all. Somehow the story of this fleet of survivors outrunning the Cylons and searching for a lost Earth has never failed to capture my imagination. So when I picked this comic collection up, I had no doubt that I’d love it. I mean, it is BSG, after all!
In The Adama Gambit, our rag-tag fleet is still running, desperately trying to keep ahead of the relentless machines, when they find themselves in an unexplored and unstable region of space where a mysterious object resides. An artifact that soon begins to give members of the fleet dreams of Earth, prompting Commander Adama to halt the fleet until a full examination of the object can determine if it is indeed a beacon or portal of the lost colony.
But things are never easy in BSG. Every decision to stop running increasing the odds that the Cylons will find and destroy the fleet. And soon, Apollo and others begin to question Adama’s refusal to abandon the artifact — an internal dispute that finds the fate of humanity hanging by a thread and Adama himself wondering if it is time for him to allow the next generation to assume command of the fleet.
Pretty standard Battlestar Galactica story I know some of you are thinking to yourself, and I can’t disagree. But what makes this comic collection a worthwhile read is the sections that focus on a single character and their personal issues. We have one comic that shows Athena leading the fleet, proving that she is far more than just a pretty face and a case of nepotism run amok. Another focuses on Adama questioning his worth to humanity going forward. Boxey is highlighted in another, as he tries to live a normal life aboard a battlestar. And finally, there is the Baltar issue, which allows one to see how he could betray humanity to its murderous children. Each of these stories being well worth a read for any BSG fan.
The only thing that I did not completely love in this comic collection was the art. Honestly, it was a bit up and down. Sure, the combat scenes were generally well drawn, full of action, and very detailed, and the closeups of the characters were true to life, but somehow, the panels of people walking, talking, and moving around just seemed stagnant to me. Just my opinion though.
To get to the point, I like Battlestar Galactica: The Adama Gambit. It was about BSG, had some good stories, stayed true to the original BSG characters, and had enough plots and action going on that I never got bored with it. Maybe, it isn’t the second coming of Stan Lee or Jack Kirby, but it is better than a lot of the standard superhero fare I’ve tried lately.

hearkens back to classic BSG

I enjoyed the original Glen Larson Battlestar Galactica and was intrigued by the premise, although I’d never describe myself as a hardcore fan. Unfortunately, the TV series was tragically cut short after 24 episodes, so I decided to see if and how the comic continues the story.
This comic series is more serialized than the original BSG show, which tended to be more episodic. Each story in this comic leads directly into the next, whereas most of the TV episodes were standalone stories. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the comic, but it does mean that the individual stories lack a strong sense of identity. There aren’t any earth-shattering plot developments either.
Some of the stories in this book are campy, but so too were many of the original BSG episodes. They have that fun, flippant feel. Unlike with say the Farscape comics it seems the writers are playing it safe with the characters and the universe.
Unfortunately, the comic did go a bit too far with Commander Adama. In the TV show, Adama was always the voice of reason, always the reassuringly sane leader who was skeptical of easy solutions to problems. However, in this comic, he falls under the influence of something – I won’t say what – and suddenly thinks he can find a shortcut to Earth. To its credit, I think the comic tries to treat the situation with the appropriate gravity and the commander’s mistake haunts him, but it still seems out of character for Adama. I would have expected the great commander to possess more willpower.
The art style really varies. The art in the first two issues is too cartoonish and stylized. At least the characters are recognizable. The art in the later issues is better. It’s not quite photorealistic, but the characters have more definition. I’d ideally like an art style along the lines of J.K. Woodward’s art for IDW’s Star Trek series, which almost looks like an episode of TV, but the art usually works. I’m more frustrated that the style varies from issue to issue.
If you need a BSG fix, this comic series will do the job. The plots evoke the spirit of the TV show. Still, I have to wonder if the comic is missing an opportunity by not taking more risks with the story.
