Life as Concrete knows it is about to change forever. Former speechwriter Ron Lithgow returns as the title character in Paul Chadwick's critically acclaimed and award-winning miniseries. Trapped in an alien's rock-hard body, Lithgow is an accidental celebrity whose high profile is being courted by a front-page CEO. Though Concrete believes overpopulation to be an important issue, does he want to become the spokesperson for a controversial population control program? While Concrete mulls this generous proposition over with his biologist, Maureen, his longtime aide Larry Munro mulls over an entirely different sort of proposal. Life and violent death take center stage in this compelling new collection from an industry-renowned creative master, and the subject of overpopulation is given the trademark thoughtful exploration that Chadwick fans have come to expect. Collecting the six-issue miniseries. · Winner of seven Eisner and three Harvey awards for Concrete, acclaimed creator Paul Chadwick pulled out all the stops for his first Concrete miniseries in six years-the most mature one yet. · Chadwick was awarded the 2005 Eisner Award for Best Writer/Artist for this series!

From Booklist
Chadwick has frequently used his superhero character Concrete, a contemplative soul transplanted into a rocklike body, to comment on social issues. Here an idealistic CEO hires Concrete, whose transformation has gained him minor-celebrity status, to publicize a controversial population-control program designed to make childlessness chic by paying young couples who agree to sterilization. It's less ponderous than it sounds. Concrete's charge to publicize the project on talk shows provides a natural pretext for discussing the issue and allowing both sides their say, and there's wry irony in a spokesperson for sterilization who lacks genitalia. The most compelling sequences, however, take place on the edges of the main story line. Concrete's relationship with Maureen Vonnegut, the biologist assigned by the government to study him, takes an unexpected but long-developing turn, and his assistant Larry Munro pays the price for neglecting population-control measures. As always, Chadwick's artwork is as enticing as the script. His delicate yet assured line is sensuous or bold as needed, and his compositions are consistently interesting yet always advance the story. Gordon Flagg

Have you read many thought-provoking comic-books?
By Josema
Well, you can add this one to the list. Although I am an a truly avid comic-book reader, I cannot say I have read many titles that make me think after reading them. And hey, that's OK, but with Mr Chadwick's big opus Concrete you get the bonus: an entertaining, well-written story with real and likable characters PLUS a thought-provoking and feeling-filled drama. Highly recommended, as all Concrete's titles.

Story for all ages
By Zimal M
Nothing against super heroes, but Concrete shows the depth that can be portrayed in comic book form. Chadwick has also issued stories, but the comics are complete in many other ways. There is no violence nor sex yet it is entertaining for adults as well as teenagers. Concrete is humorous, sentimental, thought provoking, and entertaining. I wish a movie had been made, even a tv show since the concept of a human trapped in an alien body has a lot of mileage.

It would Have Been a Five
By shrich2
Wow. Black and white. I should have paid closer attention before I bought. Otherwise this would have been five stars. I would rank this as the best Concrete story yet. How many comics/graphic novels tackle the issues involved with over population? And Maureen finally loses her scientist's cold remove. I loved it. If you aren't familiar with Concrete, it would probably be best to start with some earlier stories to get a feel for the relationships of the main characters. And, by the way, this one isn't for kids.
