Graphic Novel Review: “Aquaman and the Others Volume 1: Legacy of Gold”
By ERSInk . com
DC Comics gives the King of Atlantis his own team of super heroes to lead in “Aquaman and the Others Volume 1: Legacy of Gold.” The graphic novel collection gathers together issues 1 through 5 of the new series with Aquaman #1 and Aquaman Annual #1. The captivating book is written by comic mainstays John Ostrander (Suicide Squad, Firestorm) and Dan Jurgens (Booster Gold, Superman).

Aquaman reunites with The Prisoner, Ya’Wara, and The Operative for a deadly mission. They join forces after finding themselves targeted by an unknown foe. The super team soon realizes they're being hunted by a predator who wants their Atlantean artifacts!

The inclusion of the “hidden” artifacts of Atlantis gives “Aquaman and the Others Volume 1: Legacy of Gold” a mythical and supernatural quality which makes the tale more epic. Imagine a treasure hunt in which the items being fought over are physically attached to the very super hero stars of the story. The villains must find a way to strip their trophies from the clutches of Aquaman and his colleagues.

The graphic novel is rated T for teens. It includes comic book violence and mild gore, mild profanity, and some mild frightening and intense scenes. Anyone who watches PG-13 action movies should be fine with “Aquaman and the Others Volume 1: Legacy of Gold.”

“Aquaman and the Others Volume 1: Legacy of Gold” is another reminder of the majesty DC Comics has bestowed upon the King of Atlantis thanks to Geoff Johns’ successful retooling of the character for the New 52. John Ostrander and Dan Jurgens have forged a compelling tale full of betrayal and revenge which examines the lengths one will go to in order to regain their family legacy. The various artists like Allen Martinez and Lan Medina visually realize the epic story and give the super heroes the imagistic limelight they deserve.

I like Aquaman, so I really wanted to like this book, but it just didn't do it for me.
By Matt Anderson
Collects Aquaman and the Others issues #1-5, Aquaman issue #20, and Aquaman Annual #1

I like Aquaman, so I really wanted to like this book, but it just didn't do it for me. I even invested in the individual issues early on, so below I will have some spoiler-filled reviews of some of the issues.

I don't know why I didn't like this. When Geoff Johns first introduced The Others in his run on "Aquaman," I really took to the team. While Dan Jurgens is a good writer, the only thing I can think of is that he just didn't write this team very well.

I wouldn't be able to recommend this book to anyone unless they were a fan of the character Aquaman.

The Others are made up of the following team members:

The Operative
Ya'Wara
Prisoner of War
Sky
Aaron Cole

ISSUE-BY-ISSUE SPOILER-FILLED REVIEWS:

Aquaman #20: Issue 20 slightly ties in to Aquaman's search for stolen Atlantean weapons, however The Others end up on a surprise mission. Meeting a potential new team member, Sky, and facing a new villain, the Skinwalker, The Others come together again in this one shot adventure. I still really like Operative, but while it is interesting that he is older than expected, I think it would be more interesting if that was a secret from even his team members. I like how Sky's ability to contact the ghost world has the potential to bring the dead Other team members back into the picture.

Aquaman and the Others Issue #1: I’m already invested in this series, and plan to buy each of the individual issues, because I’m a big Aquaman fan. With that being said, this was not the best first issue. It brings the team together, but I wasn’t intrigued by any part of the story. I’m not sure if a non-fan of Aquaman would bother picking another issue up after this first one. I like the idea of the Others, and really enjoyed them in Aquaman’s other title. I especially like the Operative. I’m sensing a love connection between Operative’s grandson and Sky. (2.5 Stars)

Aquaman and the Others Issue #2: The dead Other, Kahina the Seer, reaches out to Sky and informs her that Kahina’s sister has been kidnapped. She tasks the Others with saving her sister. Kahina’s sister, Sayeh, now has the Seer power, and it sounds like her visions are describing events that we will see in the “Futures End” event. In her vision, half-human/half-machine people are attacking, and some of them are heroes. A brother/sister combo are the ones holding Seyah prisoner, and they seem to answer to their grandfather. By the end of this issue, the Others come face-to-face with the brother/sister baddies. Aquaman was kind of lame in this issue, but Operative and Prisoner of War continue to be awesome. (2.5 Stars)

Aquaman and the Others Issue #3: More boring. I wish I hadn’t preordered so many of the issues ahead of time. I’m planning to stop collecting this book ASAP. This issue featured the debut of the villain, Legend. Using what appears to be telekinesis, Legend stabs Aquaman with Arthur’s own trident. Issue ends there. (2 stars)

Aquaman and the Others Issue #4: I pre-ordered this individual issue before I decided that I didn’t want to buy these issues anymore. This issue continues the trend of this series being just OK. Not really worth my time other than Aquaman is around and I like him. Vostok, who died back when the Others were first introduced, is back, but I think it is a clone of the original guy. Or maybe there’s just been a ton of clones of the same guy. (2 stars)

RE: The Others continued...
By Karolus Magnus
A spin-off title from the main Aquaman book (which is one of DC's more consistent New 52 titles). Written by veterans Dan Jurgens and John Ostrander -the book can be full of surprises but bogs down after a while. The artwork by Lan Medina is serviceable though nothing to write home about. It's not his best work by any measure. The fill-in artists are even worse.

The main storyline is actually a (sort of) continuation of Aquaman Volume 2: The Others by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis. Although this title works as a standalone, I suggest you read that one first - it's a much superior book in terms of story and art -and is the first introduction in the DC universe for many of the characters in this title.
The Others are not exactly 'Justice League-y' -they're a bit unconventional in 'superhero comic book' sense (they have no problems killing their enemies) but they are very much connected to DC/Aquaman's universe, as most of them use supernatural Atlantean relics as weapons.

The Team:
Ya'wara -a bikini-clad Brazilian jungle girl who uses an Atlantean teleporter (she's also an environmentalist -a clumsy effort at characterization IMO). She's also Arthur's ex or something...
Prisoner of War -a haunted American soldier who summons ghosts of dead American soldiers to help him. He also has Atlantean shackles that emits a force field.
Sky -a Native-American teen with 'Sixth Sense'-type powers i.e. see dead people.
The Operative -an old, rich dude who read Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns one too many. Oh...his 'Robin' is his 17 year-old grandson.

So there you go: a senior citizen, a military veteran, a Latin American, a minority teenager - sounds like an Equal Opportunity Employment Office brochure. LOL!
All in all, three and half stars. A commendable effort that doesn't quite live up to its promise.

Note: I'm also reading the current issues which features my old favorites: KGBeast and NKVDemon (though not enough IMO) - check it out or wait for the second volume - also Medina's art seemed to have improved too.
Note 2: DC recently announced the cancellation of this title after barely a year in publication. So there's that...
