For two decades, writer-artist Chadwick has explored human nature in his stories about Concrete, a gentle man whose intelligence aliens transplanted into a seven-foot, granitelike body possessed of astonishing strength and heightened senses. Unlike conventional superheroes, who battle costumed criminals or intergalactic foes, Concrete, aided by Larry Munro and biologist Maureen Vonnegut, uses his powers to save the world one small step at a time. Here he helps save a family farm and travels to Nepal to build a much-needed footbridge. He also takes advantage of his exceptional capabilities to enjoy unique experiences. After building the bridge, he climbs Everest solo. Chadwick had a firm grasp of Concrete's character from the beginning, but in these stories, mostly from the series' second year, he hit his stride, achieving a distinctive blend of thoughtful characterization and compelling plotting. Worth the effort.

Heights collects Concrete issues #6-10 and numerous shorter stories from various anthology comics.
The concept of the comic is summarized often to introduce each story and the adventures are mostly episodic in nature. Volume 1 isn't really a prerequisite.
Former Senatorial speech writer Ron Lithgow is trapped inside a 7+ ft. and 1,000+ lb. body of stone and known to the world as Concrete, the result of a government cyborg project. The story is a compromise with the government to allow him some freedom without alarming the public with the true alien origins of Concrete's situation. With unique abilities and requirements that are both blessing and curse, Ron travels with the only friends who know his secret trying to find meaning in it all and do some good along the way.
Heights is a diverse collection that sees Concrete continue his attempts to help those who reach out to him, travel near Mt. Everest, and face personal dilemmas both unique to his situation and familiar to all of humanity. At it's core Concrete is a comic about the human condition, and as such it's extremely text heavy and the pace deliberate. The research and detail presented is amazing, from the working of farms to the cultures of places they travel to, and everything in between. It mostly works, but the narrative does occasionally become slow and overwhelming under the weight of it all.
There's a harsh realism here too, with things happening that are never explained and cruel twists of fate involving the darkness in people's hearts. This makes it feel genuine and adds significant insight, but can also make for a difficult read and drastically reduce the entertainment value when particular tales don't resonate. There's wonder here to help break up the darkness, but not a lot of light. My favorite stories in this collection are a short side story to Concrete's travel to Everest called Goodwill Ambassador and a touching story about his past and present called Always Fences.
Concrete contains fantastic concepts and an original approach that flails a bit in the execution. Still, this volume is quite solid overall and the good stuff is great.

As strong as the first volume

One of the best graphic series I've ever read, if not the best -- beautifully and imaginatively drawn, with deep, moving stories that contain most every characteristic people look for in storytelling (intellect, humor, pathos, adventure, sorrow, joy, awe, sex, movie parodies, and a three-legged dog). What would your life become if you were suddenly transformed into a 1,200-pound hunk of ugly, indestructible rock? Paul Chadwick answers that question from most every conceivable direction, often with unexpected, hilarious, exciting, and very touching results. The series hasn't lagged at all in quality so far -- this second volume is, overall, just as good as the first. And the way the stories are being collected is great -- chronology is preserved while at the same time presenting relevant side stories that may have originally appeared in entirely different times/places.

The first volume was good, this one is better

Concrete started strong, and there are wonderful stories in that first volume, but this second installment collecting (among other things) the second half of the original 10 issue Concrete series from the late '80s shows Chadwick's storytelling becoming more complex and rewarding, setting the stage for the masterfull run of mini-series collected in the later volumes.
The stories in this volume continue Concrete's attempt to "do great things," whether that's climbing Everest solo or helping out a struggling family farm, but it's the two stories from later in the book dealing with Concrete's old, human life catching up with him that are my favorites.
