About the Author
Julie Smedley Massey, is a Certified Health Education Specialist, writer and lecturer. She has degrees in psychology, counseling and depth psychology. Ms Massey founded Integral Health Options and has presented health seminars and health consultations to corporations, small businesses, universities and rehabilitation institutes. She has written and published her book "Health is a Habit" to extend her mission to educate, motivate, and support individuals to create their own healthy lifestyle incorporating physical, mental, emotional and spiritual awareness. She lives in Knoxville, TN with her husband Rayford, and their cat Cairo.

"I stand corrected"

I just read the book and it is well researched, well formatted, and an excellent guide for taking responsibility for your own health habits and how to make real changes. I work in a primary care setting (M.D.s and FNPs) in a rural area, as a licensed clinical therapist, providing individual and family counseling. We are working on integrating behavioral health and primary care. Frequently a medical provider will give a patient a computer generated handout regarding health problems and recommendations for behavior change. Many of these pieces of paper are discarded on the way out the door. I myself have received such handouts, and found them to be difficult to read. A kinder, gentler approach would be for the provider to use this book as a guide for discussion with a patient, to assess the patient's level of motivation and ability to understand the information, and strategies for giving it a try. Frequently patients feel 'talked down to' and will just ignore what is being said to them. This book could be an excellent training guide/resource for new medical providers, seasoned medical providers, counselors, support staff, family and friends. I will use it in my open support group, where all are coping with chronic health conditions.
Such a usable tool will be greatly appreciated in this group where I've been heard to say, "I don't want to read any more books by professionals telling us how to make our lives better, I just want to hear your story and let's find what might work for you..."
Well, I stand corrected on the not reading any more books... this book is written by a professional, AND it hits the mark on how to offer support rather than give advice.
I picked it up at a friend's house, just out of curiosity. So glad I did.

Who could imagine that a book about achieving good health could be such fun

Who could imagine that a book about achieving good health could be such fun? Julie Massey could, and she made it easy for the rest of us. This book is chock full of good information about so many issues that affect us all: how to get better nutrition, how to make exercise an effective part of daily living, how to avoid stress and/or deal with it. There are sections on sleep health, dental health, smoking and addiction. Massey is never "preachy," and her book is sprinkled throughout with entertaining cartoons. It's an easy read, uplifting, and truly helpful. What a terrific combination!
