RICK JOHNSON: Artist-- Rick Johnson (aka The World's Smallest Giant) is a writer/artist living in Tuscaloosa Alabama. Having grown up on a steady diet of comic books and horror movies, he naturally thought he could earn a living in one of those fields. Much to his surprise, life often throws curve balls. So Rick took a “real” job and became a productive citizen. But he never outgrew his love of all things macabre. A few years ago, Rick began self publishing his own brand of horror and science fiction under the banner Phat Daddy Studios Presents. With stories like Bune’s World, LMC-1 and Hard Luck, he continued to refine his approach to graphic storytelling. Operation Silver Moon marked a turning point. Teaming with award winning writer Bobby Nash gave Rick the opportunity to revamp his drawing style. Taking cues from E.C. comics, Warren Publishing magazines, and 40s film noir, Rick injected a new mood into his art. Currently, Rick is providing artwork for the horror web series Upyri and collaborating with writer Sean Taylor on the science fiction tale A Stitch In Time: The Return of The Invisible Man for IDW. He is also working on a followup to his Phat Daddy Fable Hard Luck.

You gotta love monsters with priorities.
By David L. Brzeski
Having read and enjoyed several of Bobby Nash’s prose stories, I thought it would be interesting to check out his writing for comics. Conveniently, I was offered a pdf review copy of his latest work in that medium, ‘Operation: Silver Moon’.
Given the title, it’s not going to surprise anyone that the story involves a werewolf. In this case Tom Lupus is a werewolf special agent, running missions for the US Army during World War Two. He’s dropped into the Carpathian Mountains of Romania to sort out a problem involving Nazis and an occult artifact. He meets a vampire—obviously, he’s in Romania—but despite centuries of hatred between werewolves and vampires, they discover they both hate Nazis more. You gotta love monsters with priorities.
The sharp-eyed will notice a couple of very subtle crossover references. I particularly like the one about, “that Jewish ark”. Fans of Bobby Nash’s prose fiction may also recognise the pilots who lead the air strike, but I have to admit I didn’t, until it was pointed out to me.
There’s a clear love for the comics of the 50s and 60s in Rick Johnson’s artwork. I liked the classic touches, like the floating heads to signify when Lupus, or his hairy alter-ego were conversing with each other in their minds. It was interesting to have a werewolf that, while still brutal, was capable of reasoned conversation. Monster special agents are not a new concept, by any means, but it’s still an entertaining idea, and I look forward to following Lupus’ adventures in future volumes.
