It All Comes Full Circle in Tinsel-town
By Keith S. Borders
Where we left off: Archer & Armstrong have survived the assault of Bloodshot and the H.A.R.D. Corps, with both sides finding common ground and parting in a most mutually beneficial way. For A&A, that means Archer gets his file from Project: Rising Spirit, including details about the last known whereabouts of his parents.

Volume 6 of Archer & Armstrong presents the culmination of the masterful epic that Fred Van Lente set in motion since the titles launch. To say that a lot goes down in this trade would be an understatement, and anyone who is not familiar with the story to this point will probably get lost midway through. Van Lente puts the bow on his story here, and relies heavily on story points from earlier events. Bad for new readers, but amazing for anyone who has been along for the whole ride and will be connecting various dots together, and the conclusion of the story is a jaw dropper.

Dead celebrities (or are they?), thinly veiled references to a certain infamous Hollywood-centric cult (rhymes with Scientology)(oops), Arthurian mythology, metaphysics, time travel, pop culture … there are some pretty heady concepts being tossed around during this arc. I am of the opinion that this story arc reads better in the trade paperback format. There it can be ingested in one sitting, if one wishes. I originally read these in the monthly issues, and the wait between each issue often resulted in me feeling not “up to snuff” on the subject matter.

Also included in this trade are the short stories that were part of the milestone 25th issue. Highlights there were Armstrong buying himself his first beer (classic!) and a touching piece set several years (decades?) in the future as the Immortal Brothers gather to toast to Archer’s memory on his birthday. I am not ashamed to admit I got the lump in the throat reading that one!

This trade marks the end of the current Archer & Armstrong run. While there may certainly be more sometime in the future, fans need not be sad to see the boys go. I strongly recommend you head on over and check out The Delinquents tpb, and see what happens when our beloved duo encounters The World’s Worst Superhero team of Quantum & Woody (here’s a hint: it’s hobo-rific!)

A brilliant wrap up of many of the plot lines left dangling from the beginning of the series, this is quick, light, silly and even better with the second read through. Although some of the real funny moments that really focused on character are missing, the "Hotel California" and it's pseudo-religious cult and the throngs of dead celebrities are the real stars here.

This 6th book in the Archer & Armstrong wraps up the series very well, centering on Archer's quest to find his parents and leading to Armstrong dealing with the Wheel of Aten he created centuries before. More whacky and crazy adventures dealing with the Church of Retrology which is in charge of 'Hotel California' where all the dead celebrities who are still remembered are stuck in limbo until they are finally forgotten.

Fred Van Lente does a great job of leading us on this fun romp through another conspiracy filled storyline. There's a nice plot twist or two to be had, and a great wrapping up of many of the ongoing plot threads from throughout the whole series. I really enjoyed this run and I look forward to the upcoming 'Ivar, Timewalker' series also written by Fred Van Lente about Armstrong's time travelling brother, Ivar.
