Like Jesus we too can use stories, His stories, to teach and learn life-lessons. Traditional 12-step programs have a positive tract record in guiding the recovery experience for thousands of people. These programs follow the principles and spiritual values found in the Bible, specifically: The Sermon on the Mount; The Book of James; and 1 Corinthians 13 (Dick B. 2005). Studying the steps, while examining their biblical principles, will guide in discovering why they have been effective and how they can be instructional on our recovery journey. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) include an abundance of personal recovery stories. Why? Evidential proof this curriculum works

Seven years ago I was in ministry at the White County Justice Center when I was asked by the sheriff's office if I would be interested in training for a new program for the female inmates at the jail.
I had prayed for years that God would make a way for me to be able to minister in a more personal way to these ladies. Typically worship service could be as many as 30+ women coming out into an open room and it was hard to get around to talk to each one of them in the time allotted. Not, to just find out what they were in jail for but, to actually find out why they were there. I was praying for a way to be able to spend more time getting to know these ladies.
Well when I was asked to go and train for this program I knew that it was an answered prayer.
I rem really had know idea what to expect when I went to meet Dr. Marjorie Wynn. I was anxious, nervous, apprehensive and just felt under qualified until the moment I walked thru the door of her home.
Dr Margie is to say the least a "character" who like Peter Pan never wanted to grow up.
I discovered right away that she was willing to do what ever it took to get the attention of the inmates long enough to implant the seeds of hope in their hearts.
Dr Wynn was in the process of writing the curriculum now known as Rejoice in Recovery and... she needed a guinea pig lol:-).
She introduced me to the Life Recovery Bible and her Rejoice in Recovery curriculum which go hand and hand together. One of the first points she made was that, it was meant for persons who did not know the bible very well including me!! Instead of saying turn to Jeremiah 29:11 it said turn to page....1234. This impressed me because some inmates were intimidated about not knowing exactly where Jeremiah is located in the bible. The second point I loved was that she had taken impressive bible characters such as Jonah (so impressive as to have a book in the bible about him), and made him a man, a common imperfect man with issues just like these inmates had and were facing. Dr Wynn went strait for the heart getting these inmates to see that they were no different than some of the greatest bible characters such as David, Paul, Peter etc....
This has been a pilot program for the past seven years in White County soon after starting the woman's program, a men's program was implemented. I am so blessed to be able to see the lives that have changed and remain forever changed because of this program. It opened the door for more classes, more programs, after care and even a transitions house.
Thank you Dr Margie for following your heart. and for the leadership of the Spirit of Love that is displayed throughout this curriculum.

Faith-Based 12 Step Participant's Guide

I have been using this material in the Women's County Jail for some time and it has been very effective and well received.
Because each Step is based on a biblical character, biblical principles are taught and the strengths/weaknesses of these
biblical characters show their human nature and need for a Savior. The theme of God's love is the focus of this 12 Step Program
and for those in a Recovery Program, they need to know that there is hope in Jesus Christ.

Effective Curriculum

This was very effective curriculum for me personally and I liked this curiculum because it helped me learn biblical principals to overcoming addictions. I learned so much about the Bible and it has stuck with me. I also seen first hand the effective impact this curriculum has had on many lives during a class that this curriculum was being taught in 4 years ago. I really liked this curriculum and would suggest it to any one focusing towards recovery.
