Volume 6 of "No Matter How I Look at It..." introduces a new dynamic into this darkly hilarious series by giving Tomoko Kuroki an enemy/rival. Kotomi Komiyama was introduced at the end of the last volume as a face from Tomoko's middle-school past who holds a serious grudge against her for an event Tomoko doesn't even remember. Well, we now discover the backstory behind her hatred, and no matter how we look at it, it is definitely all Tomoko's fault. (Surprise, surprise!)
Komiyama is an interesting character, an analytical, introverted girl who would probably be considered a little cold by most, but she avoids manga stereotypes by being neither a human robot nor a tsundere. She just doesn't wear her heart on her sleeve, and except for a certain crush she harbors, she's low on sentiment and doesn't seem to have many friends. All of this *should* make her a good comrade for Tomoko, but unfortunately our prickly little protagonist is as quick to take offense as to give it. A few ill-chosen words from Komiyama make the grudge mutual and ignite an all-out war of cheap shots and low blows. It figures that it would be hate rather than love or courage that finally brings Tomoko out of her shell after 5 volumes, but the results are both appalling and gut-bustingly funny. We've seen the social fallout Tomoko can create when she's not even trying; when she puts her mind to it, she's kind of terrifying! Komiyama is no pushover herself, but she's about to learn a lesson about how dangerous it is to pick a fight with a twisted loner with absolutely nothing to lose.
The other thing I love about this volume is how well it shows off the depths of Tomoko's social dementia. One particularly good example is when a girl loans Tomoko some lip gloss--a simple friendly gesture that Tomoko mistakes for a lesbian come-on, feigns disgust over, subtly encourages, and then proceeds to get screaming-furious about when it turns out to be nothing after all. Through it all, she's paranoid, narcissistic, insecure, perverted, ungenerous, short-tempered, tactless, and selfish... Yet, as always, when her neuroticism finally has time to settle down, the girl generally wants and tries to do the right thing in her own misguided way, and you hope things turn out well for her because of that. Tomoko won't be everyone's idea of a good main character, but if you relish really flawed heroines, she's a dark queen among peasants.
In short, "Watamote" / "No Matter How I Look at It..." continues to be one of the only manga series on the market today that can make me cackle in an empty room like an idiot every time I read it, and it's only getting better as it goes. 5/5, and highly recommended.

The book came in perfect condition and was an amazing read

The book series continues with more stories of the awkward situations that Tomoko has to confront. The book came in perfect condition and was an amazing read. The art style and the word choice helped me get a better understanding of Tomoko and it also made me feel as if I was living those moments as well.
