Standard Yaoi Plot

The story focuses on three main characters involved in a love triangle, Misawa, the somewhat defensive serious straight laced physician, Kazami, the easy going playboy type surgeon that sleeps around that Misawa has been pining for since their intern days, and Touno, the friendly romantic (or you get the sense he is from his interaction with Misawa) intern who develops feelings for Misawa. If you've read Hero Heel (another work of Tateno), the story follows a similar route where the love triangle heads (even the personality type of three parallel the three main characters in that story a bit), except shorter, less developed and dealing with a hospital setting instead of show biz.
There's really not much to say about the plot and its overall a standard yaoi plot dealing with school friends/co-workers [again, what draws it back is a lack of proper build up and details about the background behind why Misawa fell in love with Kazami other than Misawa developed a crush on him ever since their intern days and being friends]. A good chunk of the story takes place in the hospital with most of the focus on Misawa and events in the hospital (which throws medical terminology here and there, but again felt kind of thrown in) and his feelings towards Kazami at the moment (mostly contemplating how Kazami doesn't see how he's feeling for him).
***Spoilers*** Touno I found to be likeable since he was essentially the character that was willing to wait for Misawa to develop feelings for him. Touno genuinely seemed to care for Misawa and develops as a character over the course of the manga, while both Kazami or Misawa were kind of bland (didn't like or hate). After Kazami discovers that Touno and Misawa are trying to date, he essentially swoops in to steal Misawa away (with Misawa not even questioning his playboy habits or Kazami giving the cliché excuse that he was having sex to fill the void) and claiming after he saw Misawa with Touno, he knew he was always in love with him. ****End Spoiler******
The art though is standard Tateno art, the characters (although they look similar to characters from her previous works) and backgrounds both look nice. There is sex near the end but it's not very detailed.
Overall I would only recommend it if you're a Makoto Tateno fan or need a quick read. Otherwise, I would say this manga is just okay. The art is pretty but the plot is standard yaoi that isn't particularly compelling or anything new.

A bit harder on the heart than the sequel.

This is an emotional rollercoaster. Poor Touno, pining away while Kazumi remains oblivious. (Well, at least until he isn't.)
The main character is a classic Nice Guy/uke who's juuuuuust a bit of a wuss. He wants to be happy, be in love, and do the right thing, but noooo, he falls for a straight guy. A straight playboy-type, no less. And Touno--the poor guy who has feelings for the MC--has to suffer the same fate: unrequited love for everybody!
My biggest gripe is actually with the format. I read the Kindle edition on a 7" Kindle Fire HDX, and the screen displayed two pages of manga at once, in Portrait mode. I had to double-tap on a page to enlarge it to full-screen, and even then, the image quality was pretty poor. The smallest print was almost too blurry to read, and zooming in didn't help. I'm going to try reading it on the Kindle app on my iPad and see if the problems are specific to the device. (Might buy it from B&N and try it on the Nook app, too.)
Potential spoiler, re: an element that is *not* included in this story--there is no rape or attempted rape. Some folks don't mind the Rape Trope, some folks would rather know about it before it blindsides them mid-story. So, for anyone who cares, there is no rape here.
If you like this volume, you'll probably enjoy the sequel. Yay for Touno getting the spotlight! If you want spoilers/warnings for it, they're in my review on the product page.

Team Touno

Makoto Tateno is my FAVORITE mangaka, and I buy his work religiously, so of course this series was a given. Unfortunately, I found myself baffled by the progression of this story. By the end, I was honestly DISAPPOINTED the main character,Misawa, didn't end up with Touno, the "competitor". He was multi-dimensional, had a believable conflict arc, and truly seemed to have Misawa's best interests at heart. The object of Misawa's affections, Kazami, on the other hand, was kind of a shallow character and not much depth was given to his personality. It just really felt forced at the end, when he magically revealed some tenderness towards Misawa.
I'm just SO glad Touno got his own book.
