Harder Opponents + Greater Stakes = More Excitement

In the third volume of Girls und Panzer, Oarai goes into the semifinals match against Pravda High School, the previous champions, with much of the team starting to become complacent and few knowing what is truly at stake in this match. What follows is Oarai's most desperate battle yet, and Yukari learning a great deal about the girl she admires more than anyone else.
Yukari's character arc develops further here, as she goes from relying on Miho to lead their school to victory to resolving to stand behind Miho in personally trying times.That's an interesting bit of character development, but as you'll notice, Yukari's character revolves around Miho. Since a great deal is at stake for Miho in this match, it might have been better to see her thoughts. That said, Miho's subplot is suitably dramatic, and gives Yukari and the reader even more reason to hope for Oarai's victory.
The match with Pravda is quite exciting, and the difficulty of it is significantly above Oarai's previous opponents. It ends as you might expect, but at times, Oarai is forced to pull off improbable maneuvers to stay in the match, let alone win. Unfortunately, one of those moments is cut from the manga, and given that it's not something Yukari would have witnessed, that's further proof that the point of view does limit the story. Of course, there are some added scenes that are quite interesting, including one that increases the stakes in a very significant way, but, unfortunately, is not followed up on as much as it could have been.
All in all, the manga adaptation does have its flaws, but it also does some things quite well, and is still as full of exciting tank action as the anime is.

Unlike the previous two volumes, volume three departs from the anime in several ways... All of them good. The story continues to be told from a classmates perspective of the main character. A very quick read but packed with characters, information and wonderful drawings.
