"I Heard the Wheels of History Begin to Turn"

The largest naval battle of the war in seventeen years that began in Arpeggio of Blue Steel Vol. 2 continues. In order to give Gunzou and crew time to get back on board 401, the White Whale launches a diversion, distracting the Fog battleships but sustaining heavy damage in the process, forcing 401 to launch a diversionary attack to draw the Fog's attention away from the wounded White Whale. Unlike Kirishima and Haruna, who are in direct contact, 401 and the White Whale must do their coordination in total communication blackout, relying on the fact that Maruri Hibiki, the former sonar operator of the 401 and the former classmate of the crew, knows Gunzou's tactics (and mind) like the back of her hand. Meanwhile, Kirishima, in the throes of joyous ambition and ego, is determined to take out 401 BEFORE Fog reinforcements can arrive and steal the credit, so with the reluctant acquiescence of Haruna, she recklessly presses the attack. The result, while not foreordained, is no surprise:
The Fog suffer their worst defeat of the war, largely if only partially at the hands of a human designed ship with the 401 running interference.
The rest of the book plays out in a series of vignettes. The mysterious little girl, Makie Osakabe, makes a couple of unusual finds in the wreckage of the naval base. Possibly rogue Takao has made it to her secret destination and received a nasty surprise. Gunzou's father is observed on board the Fog super battleship Musashi engaging in an unusual conversation with her. Having decided to do it, Gunzou details to his crew the plan to transport the vibration torpedo to America. Finally, a mysterious Fog-like submarine Iona doesn't recognize, takes a shot at her.
The mental models continue to exhibit ever more counterproductive patterns of behavior. Kirishima's desire to hog the credit has resulted in disaster. Heavy Cruiser Maya is behaving like a childish brat, Musashi is up to something with Gunzou's father, Yamato isn't confiding in her subordinates, and fleet flagships Kongou and Nagato are increasing distrustful of their superiors. But other than that they are working out just fine....

My 11-year-old daughter watched the Arpeggio of Blue Steel anime with me and loved it. When I told here there was a manga she flipped with joy and asked if we could get it. Well, she burned through the first 3 volumes on Christmas Day (when I gave them to her) and she eagerly awaits every new volume.
The story can be a bit heavy for a tween (she hates that term) at times, but my daughter understands it's just a story and isn't real. The story is engaging enough that both my daughter and I reread these semi-regularly.
