A fun time traveling adventure... with no introduction in trade
By J. Lyons
Taking it's name from one of my favorite arcade games of all time, Turtles In Time is a fun time traveling adventure in the IDW universe with some strange temporal implications.
You've got turtles with dinosaurs, turtles in Feudal Japan, turtles on a pirate ship and then turtles in the near future all thanks to a mix up with Renet, a Time Sorceress (who was in the Annual 2014.... which hasn't been collected). Paul Allor and Erik Burnham take turns writing the issues and the voices are mostly consistent, but the whole story feels a bit out of place. It really needs some kind of editor's note letting you know when the issues are set (this story is set between issues #37 and #38.... which is the middle of Volume 10: New Mutant Order).
This isn't the best of the IDW run, but it was fun and brought back a slew of memories for me like the Caveman Ninja Turtle Toys, TMNT III, the arcade game and the legendary episode from TMNT 2K3 Same As It Never Was. Until you know the history of these characters in the comics, this isn't a must read.

Beautiful Art, Okay Stories
By Katherine Chan
A word of warning before you purchase this book - if you don't follow the current IDW TMNT comic, you may find yourself getting lost. Very very lost and confused to boot. If you follow the IDW storyline, you'll probably enjoy reading these little side arcs - although I'm not totally convinced that they add a lot to the main story line. There are four main story arcs in the Turtles in Time book:
1) The Turtles in Prehistoric Time (art by Ross Campbell)
2) The Turtles in Feudal Japan (art by Charles Paul Wilson)
3) The Turtles on a Pirate Ship (art by Ben Bates)
4) The Turtles in a Dystopian Future (art by Dan Duncan)
The art throughout the book is solid - I particularly like Ross Campbell's cute versions of the turtles, as well as Ben Bates highly detailed art. It's really nice to have various artists illustrate the comics, and I liked the variety. While the art was top notch, the story lines seemed "meh" to me - it's almost as if the Turtles were sent back in time to botch things up for themselves in the future (or more appropriately, present time). I'm not saying these stories were not entertaining to read, but they are not up to the level of story telling like the individual turtle side arcs or the villians arcs. The best possible storyline in this book is the Feudal Japan story line or the Future story line as it gives a little back story as to why Saki was so hell bent on killing Yoshi (good job on screwing yourself and your family there, Leo) and the Future story line was interesting to read as we get to see a little bit more into Donnie's conflict with fighting and self doubting of every one of his decisions (although personally I would've like to see a SAINW arc instead...go watch the 2003 cartoon for possibly the best episode in Turtle cartoon history). There are also some awesome art prints in the back of the book as well as between chapters...these are always fun to go through.
Overall, the book is great for any hard core turtle fan, although if given the option, I would opt for some of the other side arcs novels. I wouldn't recommend getting this for turtle newbies - for those for getting into the series, I would go for something from the main storyline instead.

Lacking some explanation, but roll with it and enjoy. Every issue has different creators and that adds to the fun.
By Wayne A McCoy
'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time' collects 4 issues of the series. Each issue is a different time period, and a different team of writers and artists. I kind of liked it.
Issue one dumps us right in the middle of our turtles runing from Utrom riding dinosaurs (Utrom is the race of aliens that Krang is from). A character I wasn't familiar with named Renet shows up and seems to be responsible for the time displacement, but it seems like she's still having problems. The turtles find themselves in medieval Japan and seeing a chance to change their lives by altering an event from their past. Aboard a sailing ship full of privateers, they help a crew fight off pirates, including one wielding a strange, futuristic weapon. The final issue finds them in a strange future with other anthropomorphic creatures. This strange future may have been caused by one of the guys, so soul searching is required.
My review copy was only 88 pages and the page count is listed as 104, so I'm not sure what I'm missing. There is little extra narrative explaining how this happened or why it's happening, but I don't think that's a problem. The art varies wildly between issues, but I also don't think this is a problem. I thought it was a lot of fun.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
