Has a lot of potential!
By lilradrad
This is a combined review of Volumes 1 and 2.

I’ve read the author/illustrator Wann’s 100% Perfect Girl a few years back and although I had a love/hate relationship with that manhwa, when I saw Give to the Heart on Netgalley, I immediately requested it because as much as 100% Perfect Girl made me rage about the characters at times, it kept me at the edge of my seat with it’s soapy, angsty drama. I knew that this was originally a webtoon so I was expecting this to be in full color like most webtoons I’ve read and it was a bit of a disappointment that it wasn’t. I’ve always enjoyed the author’s illustrations though which is another reason why I was curious about this in the first place.

Give to the Heart is very different from 100% Perfect Girl because unlike the latter’s contemporary setting, the former is more of a fantasy. Years in the future, Earth has become more primitive and three god-like beings now rule the world with their extraordinary powers. One of them is Lord Ganok, the water god.

I really like the premise, it gives off that epic vibe, even though I know from the cover and from reading the author’s previous works that this is more of a romance fantasy. I enjoy reading romance so this doesn’t really bother me. I also like that in order to figure out why the characters are the way they are, we have to slowly uncover the past as the story goes along. The main characters, Sooyi and Lord Ganok, have a very complicated relationship and I’ve yet to discover the reason why. We also meet a few supporting characters but I can’t really comment more about them because I’ve only read part of the story and I’ve only really touched the surface of these characters.

In fact, at the end of the second volume you’re still not sure who’s friend from foe…there are still mysteries to uncover and characters to get to know. In all honestly, reading these two volumes felt like reading a sampler of the book and it’s a bit frustrating that I don’t know when I can get access to the rest. This is why I seldom read ongoing manga or manhwa! I’m definitely going to continue on though, because aside for liking the author’s art, Give to the Heart is also very different from the author’s past works and I would like to see where the story goes.

Overall, I can never fully share what I feel for this graphic novel because I’ve only read up till the second volume…what I can say is I’m intrigued of what I’ve seen and read so far and I think that this graphic novel has a lot of potential.

A copy was provided by the publisher, Diamond Book Distributors and NETCOMICS via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

the jokes it is fantastic. And the Lord
By Raquel
I was afraid when I started because I found strange to have these primitive colors on the beginning , but rested three pages further on, because the rest is literally manga. yey! At least the design level, because it reads from left to right (I think there's a name for this but I don't know). I think it's habit strength read from right to left when it comes to manga so it strange also is part, but nothing out there beyond.
All own manga expressions are present and that was a relief, the jokes it is fantastic.
And the Lord, it is cold and sometimes a little bad, but it's only because Sooyi the strip seriously, but this is spoilers talk to and I can not do it, I do!
But would expect the physicist who has not? Beautiful and shirt in the wind (and this part is not required, it is an extra * sigh *)
In relation to the story itself, it has a good premise and hope to develop better going forward more involving love, rather than the true hatred. Yes because both characters have a strange relationship of love-and-hate that the principle could not quite understand. But the end left me want to read the second!
As is normal in both manga comics and in general, they do not sound but often "help" the sound effects through words. How Boom! Paw! Bang! etc. And Wann used them often, but not getting to be ridiculous, it's perfect and it appeared not help either that or in them realized, they simply enter the mind.

Good art and story, but the attempted domination of the main female was uncomfortable to me
By Wayne A McCoy
'Give to the Heart Volume 1' by Wann is an interesting premise for a story. My only question after reading it is "Why can't the male characters manage to keep their shirts on?"

In the far distant future, civilization as we know it is a distant memory. Humans live in new, primitive cities, but the old cities still remain. Three gods rule things. One of these is Lord Ganok, who rules the waters. He is the most tempestuous. Denying water, or sending too much. Some of this could be due to his missing wife.

Meanwhile, his wife is trying to find her way to the Dead City in order to destroy Lord Ganok. When he finds her, he has to decide if loving her means keeping her captive and making her miserable or letting her go and making himself miserable.

It's anime style, but it reads like conventional Western comic. The anime emotions are all evident as little comic heads, or character thoughts outside of word balloons. I liked the art and story. It's not complete in this volume, but as long as you know that, and that it leans more heavily on it's Asian story roots, it's a good story. I was a little put off by the overy aggressive domination of the poor human female in this book.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Netcomics, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
